I had my girl swabbed by an experienced lady. She said to try her Saturday morning but not be too surprised if nothing happened. Sunday and Monday, we'd have more luck.

This bitch is a maiden and she really wasn't having any of it Saurday as she planted her bum and refused to stand even though the stud (experienced) did try. We couldn't go yesterday as the Stud dog owner had an emergency so we went this morning. She was flirting like no one's business but then she has been trying to entice her own mother since Saturday night - 3am to be precise. However, she was reluctant to stand and refused to allow him to mount for longer than a minute. In the end, I held her steady and we achieved a 10 minute tie. She was relaxed afterwards and they even had a little flirt.

In my breed, a slip will very rarely be successful and most experienced breeders in the breed feel that a 15 minute tie at least is best.

My questions are....should I wait till Wednesday before taking her again or should we try tomorrow? It is a little drive away but not a stupid distance - I could do a round trip in under 5 hours and the stud owner is happy for 3 tries if we go tomorrow.

Is she refusing to stand because she is a maiden (this has never stopped any of the other girls in my experience) of could her surge be slow? Day 1 was Saturday before last, she was swabbed on Monday and Thursday.

If she was ready Saturday/Sunday - how long will the eggs be approximately viable?

And finally, I shall be having the CHV but do I count 5 days from 1st mate or last? This obviously depends on if she does stand again.

I have always found that my girls will flirt and stand for their home girls at least two days before the more discerning males will have anything to do with them, the kind who won't mate a bitch until spot on.

I would say that your bitch was probably only at the early receptive stage, probably LH surge, and would not have ovulated until two days later with eggs not mature enough to be fertilised until another two days (remember they do AI 3 days after ovulation) .

Based on that theory, for optimum chance of conception I'd want another mating three to four days after that first half hearted one.  This is based on the fact that sperm should survive in reasonable condition for four days, so that timing would gibe you 8 days coverage.

So I would not go before Wednesday.

I would progesterone test as its more accurate. Worth finding someone local and getting it done with results the same day.
Re CHV that can be given anything up to 4 weeks post mating after speaking yo the manufacturer. can also be given pte mating too

No one near me does in house so it has to be sent away - hence the swabbing. The lady is very accurate and helped me get my last girl in whelp after several failed attempts. Not sure if it was her or the CHV or both but it worked.

If I travel, the nearest is 45 minutes away so not really keen on taking her in the car to draw bloods and the long trip to the stud.

I think I'd plan on going back tomorrow - Wednesday.  Yes a maiden bitch can be difficult, especially when faced with a gung-ho experienced stud dog, bt usually nature takes over when she is really right on.   And an experienced stud dog usually knows too and doesn't waste his time, or risk getting bitten!, if the b itch isn't ready.

You had one tie which probably is enough, but if the owner of the stud dog is willing for you to take her back, tomorrow, I'd do it.

By the way re a slip tie, I'm not sure it's breed-specific.  One of my studs never managed a tie, but much as I didn't allow him to be mated to that many bitches, he only missed once.   She was brought back on her next season, to my other stud who did tie with her - and she missed again.   Next time (her breeder was determined!!) she went to another stud dog outside my kennel, was mated ..... and again no puppies.   So my first male's inability to tie with his bitches wasn't relevant.

Hehehe believe it or not Mamabas, I put that bit of info regarding the breed and slip ties in for you! Your boy's ability to fire at target and leave his mark without a tie is the one thing I always remember about you and breed!!!!

I have messaged the owner and arranged to go tomorrow. We have had some air humping from her this morning and she keeps standing in front of me and wafting her tail. I think my concern yesterday was along the lines of ' was she ready on Saturday and I didn't help her understand what to do - missing the opportunity. Feeling worse because we didn't go Sunday. If she did ovulate then and we got the tie Monday - will she even stand if I wait til Wednesday....'

This is the girl who wasn't fully mentally mature at 2 so it is this season or next before I think it'll be too late for a first litter. Not too fussed about that though - if it happens it happens...if not..oh well.

If she ovulated Saturday then her eggs would have been spot on on Monday.

If you were doing Frozen AI they would not have done it until Tuesday, to allow as many of the ova to be mature as possible.  they stay viable for about 48 hours, and are ovulated over about 36.

Bet she will stand with gusto tomorrow.

For the record, I had a friend help with my matings.... much as I usually managed to get a mating, eventually, with our own bitches, rather than mess around with visiting bitches, we'd take our boys to her place and meet with the bitch/owners there.  She could mate chairs to tables having been 'with Basset' for longer than me!   We have her a percentage of the stud fee - she enjoyed helping and meeting people.  She'd upend the bitch after he 'went down' to give what was in there, a good chance of getting where it needed to be     The joys of breeding Bassets ...... and then came the whelping!

It's so strange as most of our males dislike any interference,  one has to be discreet and nip in to stop the bitch moving about once the dog wants to turn.

They can be pretty quick at times,  and some bitches try to turn turtle during the tie.

I did have one boy who helped himself - and hated me to interfere at all.  So it wasn't all 'bad' with Bassets!   He came back with us to the UK, but was too elderly to be used at stud back here.

My boy wouldn't entertain any help at all with regards to him but was happy for me to hold the bitch. With one of my girls, (and with some visiting bitches when my boy was around) I sit on a chair, hold her head over one knee and wrap my arm over it so that she stands still and steady the rib cage. In the past she would tilt to the side just as the stud entered - putting him off and threatening to throw him over.

One of my girls will just stand there and is a dream to mate - as soon as the male mounts, she braces and stays in that position with me just holding her lead!

I have found in my limited experience that studs tend to just stand there once tied and they've been helped to get their leg over the back. Bitches on the hand are just that - total bitches....

Some people just have the gift...there is a breeder who owns a stud that allows her to help him penetrate! She can hold the vulva open for him and he just walks over and mounts without any fuss (after the pair have met and exchanged pleasantries of curse!)...not something I would ever have thought of but apparently that was how she was shown and has always done it that way.

Lets see how she does today. The stud owner has offered 3 ties (new to me but our choice entirely) - might she still stand on friday?

We tend not to get 'turning'.   Think of the difficulty of doing that with short legs and long backs.   We are more likely to have the male go to sleep on top of the bitch, who is on top of US!    Most of us sit on the floor with the bitch across our knees to support them. 

I bred the sire of my youngest champion, and used him at 15 months.

On his first tie he got bored and decided to lie down!  He had already turned.

The look on my bitches face having no option but to follow suit.

I think it is so amusing when the male gets bored.  My male, Robin, looks at me after a while and "says":  Ho hum, well I think that's enough of that, and I'll be off now, so I'll see you all later....  I pat his head and say "I don't think so..."  He sighs and goes back to enduring the pickle he's got himself into...

I find that too Nimue...What really amuses me is his boredom + her 'get him away from me!' factor.

Sometimes I wonder whether the girls (who may squeal, wriggle, try to run away etc) realise that it is THEM doing the holding!
