Does anyone know how I can stop my mal from howling in the car? He has been going in the car from 6 weeks old, and we take him out at least 4 times a week, so we thought he'd be used to it by now. However, he is still howling for a whole car journey no matter what we try!
Thanks

Hi Char ....hopefully some of the more experienced people here will be able to help you ...Nuka is 19 weeks old isn't he?

This has been asked before, quite awhile ago now so someone is bound to know the why if not the solution. We have an Audi A6 2.5 Tdi estate and were told that part of the internal mechanics make a high pitch sound that dogs could hear but humans can't detect.I can't for the life of me remember where it comes from (sorry) but will ask hubby when he gets home. I think perhaps he's just singing along :) I'm sure someone said it was more common on estate cars...but I may be wrong.

Yes, Nuka is 19 weeks :)
Thanks for that! My car is a Corsa so I'm not sure if it would be the case, but he enjoys singing along to music, so this might be the answer!
Funny though, I had another mal in there with him yesterday and she was silent - when Nuka started howling she just looked disgustedly at him!

There's a TV advert there somewhere...howmany mals does it take to fill a corsa?:D Nuka and his galpal mal could be the canine Renee and Renatta :D

I can just imagine :D
They both look so sweet grinning at me in the rear biew mirror :)
Are there any other mal owners near me (S.Wales) that would like to get in contact? Its always nice to hear from fellow dog lovers :)

The reason most dogs make a noise in the car is probably that they feel motion sick. They don't actually have to be sick etc, its just that they feel bad in the head. I know this is a problem in estates paticularly. Both our bitches screamed in the car. Jasmine was seriously car sick and we had to move her from the boot space onto the back seat with a car harness. Instantly she stopped the noise. Rosie was worse, she made an horrendous noise but we persevered and kept her in the boot and she grew out of it. What it was with her was that she was so small, she was being thrown around a lot. Now shes a great lump she has quietened down completely and peace reigns in the car.

Hi Maid Marian,

That's given me hope!

My 13week Munster pup is so stressed on car journeys.
Sick and everything, even if I leave it several hours after feeding - he still brings it up.
Trying to do trips round the block everyday - but still not liking it!!

Nuka isn't sick, but it might be because he is fairly small at the moment. When he lies down, he's quiet - its just getting him to lie! He was on the bact seat, and howled, so now he is in the boot, but still howls.
Just hope he grows out of it :)

Have you thought of trying Bach Flowers Rescue Remedy, or any of the Valerian compounds available? They are supposed to have a calming effect, which might help.

I have found the solution!! Reccomended to me by a fellow mal owner - the Kong!
Its wonderful, stuffed with blended chicken, rice and carrot he chewed on it all through the car journey and we didnt hear a peep! :D

I took me until the age of now 8 months to get my 2 mals to get in the car ! Its not easy lifting in a big male that dosent want to go.It helps a lot as they get bigger and look forward in the car and they dont feel sick.I will have to give the kong a go to.

Hi Char,

Lovley dogs and they do like to sing especially to I see the moon. Just a test try your dog in another car or cars to see if he still sings. As you drive there are hi frequency noices humans do not notice and disc brakes are one of them. You may just find if it is only in your car then try smearing copper ease on the backs of your disc pads that may help. Sometimes worn diffs or bearings produce the same type of sounds.
