Im looking on advice on a litter of puppies with tear staining, something ive never had to deal with and ive been given so much advice and reasons why this is happening i have no idea how to deal with it.The last 2 litters ive had have had very bad tear staining. One litter was a repeat mating and with the last litter i lived over 40 away,we moved here 6 months ago so i thought maby it was the water change. The other litter is a different sire but same mum, last litters had absolutely no tear staining whatsover.I thought it could be the food they were being weaned even though i used the same good quality food last time but i changed to a very pure food anyway, made no difference. They have been to the vet and they said it could be something to do with allergies, the tear ducts, infact a whole range of things but said usually it corrected itself as the pup grows( but last litter of 10 same parents were all perfect) but some of these pups and future pups are destined for the show ring,im getting so worried and upset.I tried a special cleaner, used it every day and it made no difference,i just dont understand why this is happening and desperately need to hear from others who have solved this problem or have worked out the cause and what they have done to sort it,any advice much appreciated

Isn't this more often seen if the construction of the eye isn't quite right (entropion/ectropion?).    But if your vet has checked, I'd have thought he'd have picked up on that.

In one of my breeds it is very common as pups and it goes when the head breaks later on. For MOST, though not all. I've never found a way to clean it off and yes pups looks awful with two reddish stains from the eyes down the nose, meeting in the middle! Tends to be from about 5-6 weeks onwards. But it has never stayed AS bad.

It can also be because the shape of the eye is very round. In this case, tears can spill over from centre of the lower lid, instead of draining to the tear duct in the inner corner.

There is no construction of the eye and last litter, same parents were all perfect, its very strange.

Have you changed your washing powder or floor cleaning stuff.
Or could there be a draft somewhere

I had tear-staining with my youngster.  The vet examined his eyes and found that the tear ducts were constricted.  He stretched them under local anaesthetic, the problem went away for a short time, and when it recurred pup was referred to an ophthalmic specialist vet, who repeated the procedure, again under local anaesthetic.  Problem was solved and there has been no recurrance, the (ex-)pup is now 4.

Pup found no discomfort from the procedure, either while it was being carried out or afterwards;  in fact he just lapped up the extra attention.

I had this with one of my dogs - I stopped giving kibble and just forthglade wet food - completely cleared up.
Same happened with another of my dog who had a yeast problem - I stopped kibble.
Ive had it with a couple of litters but they grew out of it quickly.

Apparently adding apple cider vinegar - organic and not the cheap stuff, added to drinking water helps.

After experiencing heavy tear staining in my first litter I have always since used filtered water with a drop of apple cider vinegar in it. It has never occurred since

Hi, I changed all my dogs (Maltese) from Royal Canin to the Gain brand of dog food last year and within 6 weeks all my dogs had tear and beard staining, usually only my boy Casper normally suffers with tear staining so ive always assumed its hereditary with him. Ive always also given my dogs only filtered water as the tap water where we live has given my girls tear staining in the past. I also want to add that the two litters of puppies i had at this time all developed tear staining even before they opened their eyes at around 14 days old. I was feeding their mums on Gain small dog puppy at the time.
For dogs with tear staining i wont use anything that could damage their eyes so i rub corn flour (the stuff for thickening gravy's and stews) into the dogs eyes/beards staining until it feels dry then you can either leave it on or comb it out. For very bad tear staining i use the corn flour made into a paste with milk of magnesia and leave it to dry and then it can be combed out.
I have read that if you give you dog a tums/rennie every day it changes the Ph of the tears and stops staining but ive never tried it myself and you would have to google to make sure of doses. I hope this helps
