The so called rare/unusual colour in various breeds (Blue)

Does this colour Blue actually look more Grey to you, or more Blue ....?

I am getting old & grey now, therefore, just checking I don't need to go to specsavers

The colour looks Grey to me, how do you see it (Blue or Grey) ....?

Grey is not a colour in our breed the colour is Blue, Blue Brindle, Blue Fawn etc. When people say I want Grey, I always say that is not a colour for the breed...

Names of coulo9urs and the actual colour vary.

Strictly speaking as Blue is dilute of Black in animals we call it blue.

To the layperson desribign the colour as we would do if it were Paint then it would be Grey in many cases.

In sem breeds you do have a Blue that is a dark bluey grey.

In others yu get a nsty washed out colour that I personally find very unattractive.  This si especially true with breeds that asre also brindle ad oftehn porr brindlign can make ther colour look muddy, often the case with staffords that are Black Bridnle apperarting clakc with scattered brindle hairs.

In whippets we often get a very attractive bue colour and even with Brindle where stripes are well defined it is attractive.

Blue in GSD's is just a horrible muddy colour.

On the other hand Weimeraners are Isabella/Lilac, (dilute of Brown) but people call it grey.

Then you have the same colour described differently in different breeds.

Brown is described as Liver in some breeds, chocolate in some, and erroneously Red in Border Collies, which do have true Red (which is actually anything from Yellow through to a rich red), which some people refer to as Aussie Red.

My breed is described as Grey, but it is not a solid colour but Wolf Grey/Agouti.

saw an ad on facebook yesterday for two blue French bulldog pups, only £2600 each :eek::eek:

I find the shade varies between dogs.  Some are very much just grey but some do have a bluish tint to them.

I will have 3 please

If you think that's expensive, have a guess how much some of the 'Chocolate French Bulldog Pups' have been advertised for ....?

Its interesting about Weimaraners, as in some photos they do look to have a brownish tinge - I always thought it was the light or my eyes playing up

I agree

I have to be honest 'Slate Grey' is a very nice colour in some breeds.

My rescue BC is a blue tri. The name given to him by the rescue was Slate - and that describes his colour very well but his actual coat is awful.

His tail is like a toilet brush - very coarse hair except for the white at the tip of his tail. The hair on his back is very soft - but not the right sort of soft. The only part of him that has what I would term proper hair is where he is white and the small amount of tan markings that he also has- so tip of his tail and the bottoms of his legs. One of his legs only has white hair at the front and the feathering at the back is a mix of brown and blue, again the brown is proper hair but the blue is very fuzzy and soft. He has been neutered (rescue policy) so that hasn't helped his coat alongside the fact that he lived outside on a chain.

In my breed the grey colour in my opinion is because of blue x blue, which is weaker as they just want the blue pups. My bitch is from Blue x black/brindle mating. When you stand her next to black brindle mating you can see the difference in colour. To get the steel blue pigment you need to breed to blacks to better the pigment.

There is a slight hint of it.  I walk one most weeks and I see it too.

Weimarners always used to be called "grey ghosts" especially apt with their pale eyes, I have noticed that Whippets are going down the "blue" route in popularity, lots of wanted ads for blue puppies and breeders seem to be obliging them, not favoured very much in the show ring but that might change.

weimaraners change colour depending on the light. it is a brownish grey in most but then looks silvery grey in the sun

There have been blues shown & done really well for decades.
The problem is those whom breed good blues are no longer showing or breeding. Most Blues are being repeatedly being bred back to blue, just for the colour by unscrupulous breeders, as virtually every pet owner wants them. As been mentioned by another postee anyone whom knows colour genetics, to keep breeding the same colour to each other isn't good!!

Looks grey to me too.

But being that it is dilute in many of the more 'popular' breeds, shall we say, then to call it grey makes more sense to me.

I guess 'blue' is the fad still at the moment in some breeds.

I happened to be searching for a certain breed and some information the other day.  And found a website of someone who owns/breeds a second breed - French Bulldogs.  The price was mind blowing.  $6000 plus Australian dollars.  I was/am stunned!  And not one mention of health testing :(
- By furriefriends Date 12.12.16 10:51 UTC
yep the highest I have seen in that breed or was it bulldogs not quite sure it was a couple of years ago , was for lilac £10000. someone needs their brains tested to pay that

I agree, if the colour looks grey, lets call it grey.

I am old & grey, but nobody tells me I have blue hair, it would be nice if they did though

My last working cocker spaniel had a black and white coat, my GWP has a coat the same. My cocker was classed as a blue roan, my pointer is classed as black and white ticked. Go figure!
- By debbo198 [gb] Date 14.12.16 17:31 UTC
It must be those of us over a certain age that remember blue rinses, I even remember some with lilac hair- maybe it's people who remember their grannies having these that go for these colours
- By Gundog Girl [gb] Date 14.12.16 18:26 UTC
OMG - my last visit to the hairdresser involved 'violet' tints (I am a Granny who is always plastering over the fissures and colouring over the greys (for now)) - I thought they looked nice but now I wondering if I have I got my first blue rinse!!!!!!
- By debbo198 [gb] Date 14.12.16 18:37 UTC
HeHe I don't think it's the same these days- you could always go for full on colours and as many as you like- maybe a Xmas theme
- By Jodi Date 14.12.16 18:47 UTC
My mum would come home from the hairdressers with a blue rinse and occasionally a pink rinse:eek:

When I was in Grammar school we had 2 music teachers, one taught theory, the other one, known as 'fanny fiddle' taught the practical playing, she also ran the school orchestra and was its conductor.
There were regular concerts when she wore a fairly elaborate 'evening' type dress with the hair to match the dress colour .. be it pink, blue, lilac, pale green, gold etc.

I had almost forgotten about it till I read the last few posts

Maybe, I pretty much look like Chewybacca's Granny most mornings so anything is worth a try :-)
- By Tessies Tracey Date 15.12.16 00:44 UTC
Goodness, I guess I am showing my age, remembering the blue rinse.

These last few comments have made me smile this morning - thank you :)

My first Saturday job, too many years ago to mention, was in a hairdressers.  I can still smell the peroxide, etc.

Slightly off topic, my apologies.
