Topic Dog Boards / Health / dogs itchy bum

  I'm new to this forum and I'm looking for a bit advice . Ok so my dog started rubbing her bum across the floor , she was due to be wormed along with my other 2 dogs so off to the vets and got wormer. One week passed and she's was still doing it , I took her to the vets and the vet said her glands needed emptying. After they had been emptyed she was still doing it but not as often. 4 weeks later and she has started doing it more and now my 5 month old puppy is doing it ? They have been flaed . I'm really stuck as to what it could be ?  Anyone ever had this happen ?
Thanks

I tend to go with a problem with the anal glands when this happens.    They can become inpacted/infected although with most dogs, provided they have a normal formed stool this shouldn't happen and the glands never needing to be touched.   Once they do, it can take a while for them to settle down again and if there is infection, that too may take a different antibiotic to work.   Did your vet treat with antibiotics, and pack the glands rather than orally because oral treatment has never worked, with mine when they occasionally have this problem.   It's strange that your puppy is now doing this but he too may have impacted glands.   Have they been loose (stools) of late?

When this happens, you probably need to look to their diet or this will only keep happening otherwise.   Working as they should, expelling a bit of the fluid in there with the passing of a normal stool, you shouldn't have this problem.

What she means is that oral antibiotics don't work so the anal glands need to be packed with them!

Yep!  Def. what I meant, sorry.    Taking antibiotics orally  might work on some occasions but with the occasional problems we've had, nothing has worked as well as packing the glands.

Orally emptying glands

When I took her to the vets she just put her finger up her bum and said they needed expressing  but I didn't she anything comes out like on utube lol so it makes me wonder if she just charged me for it for nothing . I feed them all on Harrington she's been on it since she was a pup 3 years ago and never had any problems .her stools are hard but can be softer some days . The puppy just started doing as if yesterday and when she does it she licks the air ? My other dog is fine .. they are all the same breed ( pekingese )
Thanks so much for all the replys x

Try adding  small amounts of some psyllium husk  powder well mixed with water to her food for a day or two .u will have to watch to see how it affects pops aa u don't wamt it to be too soft.also don't try expressing the glands yourself unless you have been shown properly its not something to do from utube and If u  can avoid having them done again  its amuch better as once done it often needs regular expressing. The physllum husk powder is good for bulking and helping this problem. You were probably charge for the consult as you would expect and the vet correctly checked the glands given the symptoms.

Actually if this is about the need for more fiber, good old All Bran or the shop equivalent should help.   But I still don't understand a vet saying the AGs 'needed emptying' and the NOT draining them/treating as needed!!   But they will refil (they are not meant to be empty) in any case so the original problem may well happen again unless the reason for this is resolved (antibiotic packing the glands and perhaps adjusting the diet to produce a normal stool).

I can usually do mine, and know what I'm looking at in terms of what comes out BUT I don't do this from inside - usually applying pressure from outside produces what I need (or don't need!).    Apart from the Basset I have who apparently has his AGs sited a bit further in than 'usual' and so needs to be expressed from inside = a vet.
