Do you mean pushing down and straining. No I would get her checked out.

No she's not straining or pushing she's crying every 30 ish mins and digging and biting her bedding

Then this is first stage labour and I have had this last up to 36 hours,  and then a very fast second stage with all 5 pups delivered in under two hours.  On average with my medium size breed first stage has been around 12 hours.  Have also had a bitch showing no first signs,  and go straight to delivering puppies.

Good - it's all kicking off but the general rule is not to leave a bitch pushing hard and struggling, for much over 1 hour without seeing a puppy delivered - each delivery.   And unless you are experienced, the norm is to take mum and her puppies (in a box on a warm not hot pad and covered) to the vet for mum to have a shot to clear out any retained birthing material, and the puppies to be checked for abnormalities you may have missed.   I'd let the puppies top up before you leave for the vet's office so they don't start drying and upset mum en route.   And I'd either get somebody to take you or have somebody with you to watch mum, just in case she hasn't finished and delivers another on the way.

ps    Two puppies in quick order - LUCKY YOU!   Seeing this in a friend's Jackie was a revelation to me having coped with Basset whelpings (and matings!!)

God I'd have a fit if a bitch of mine strained for an hour to deliver a pup,

I get worried if they go longer than two hours between  pups,  but actually straining is normally seconds to half a minute.

So much is breed type/size dependant or even family lines.

I have had pups come so fast one after another the bitch was totally overwhelmed and needed to be stopped from trying to flea,  and wouldn't settle and accept pups until 6th pup born.

I have also had a bitch have 4 hour gaps between 4 pups and then had 5 the stillborn following Oxytocin at vet,  yet delivered her next litter of 7 much more  quickly.

Well done, every whelping is different which is why it is so difficult to predict with accuracy when and how things should happen.  Enjoy your babies!
