ive got a litter of 13 days old pups, they were 5/6 days early and she had 5 one size and 3 smaller ones and i supplemented the smaller ones with a mix of puppy milk, a small amount of glucose and rehydration salts for the first week. All but 1 pup came out with no bags or afterbirth and only 1 complete afterbirth was passed afterwards. mum had oxytocin and a 48 hour antibiotic at birth and at around 6 days old (due date from second mating) i was concerned she was getting ill from her general demeanour and she had a slightly raised temp, she was scanned a week ago 1 week post birth and had some tissue visible on scanning in her uterus but the vet said it was soft and moving so gave her a weeks antibiotics and wasnt unduly concerned. her temp was just slightly raised, pink gums and no dischage and her temp is back to normal now. 2 days after she started the antiBs her milk really started flowing and all the pups have thrived. 2 of the small one (but not the smallest) are a little moany and have been since birth, all the pups including those two have yellowy sticky loose seeded poo at the moment but last night one of the smaller ones was a little green, this morning its back to sticky yellow. they have all put on weight at a fairly even rate and seem settled enough, mum does spend time out of the box but visits regularly (she hates being hot so lays on the laminate to escape the lamp) so im wondering if they are taking too much in a short space of time during visits or if they have been affected by the antiBs (nisamox 250) or mum still has stuff inside her sending her milk bad and needs more antiBs? Im just ordering puppy wormer for them and getting some Pro-kolin just in case they get loose when i start weaning and was thinking nutri drops may help but is that pointless at this age?. mum seems fine, shes eating and drinking well (eating dry biscuit which is a first for her not to refuse til i put tasty stuff on) she looks well and apart from the baggy teats you wouldnt think she had had pups. the only other change is shes farting REALLY bad which she never has but her poo is fine and she has no discharge.

Vet has advised another scan at 3-4 weeks to check all has dissapated unless she shows signs of illness before, am i just fearing the worst and seeing problems because i have in my mind all the stuff she didnt pass and i have lingering worries over pyometra? had pups with the loose seedy poo before at this age and it hasnt concerned me unduly and had bitches retain some stuff before and again hasnt unduly worried me. her last birth was 3 pups born by ceasar as they were massive and this litter kind of just fell out (4 pups from first contraction to 4th pup in 22 mins!!!) so it was an incredibly easy birth. i guess im just asking am i seeing ghosts and imagined issues because i know how wrong it can go or does anyone think theres a real concern here??

Are you sure she didn't eat the afterbirths? It is sometimes difficult to tell as mum is usually so engrossed with her back end. A bit surprised the vet didn't give more oxytocin the flush out the tissue that was visible. If the puppies are thriving and mum seems fine nowI wouldn't be unduly concerned. Don't forget, you may be upsetting mum with your worry. Try to relax and just keep a close eye on them. 5/6 days early is fine and if they are now 13 days and thriving, I don't see much to worry about.

Farting very normal with the volume of food being eaten plus pups waste.

Re the pups poo, that is most likely the AB's.

Believe it or not, if our mums had to have antibiotics, I'd give each puppy a tiny amount of natural yogurt, on their tongues - probiotic, to counter any effect the antibiotics being given to mum and so perhaps coming through the milk might have on the puppies.

If she did take any of the placenta, that would account, I think for the farting.   But as always with pregnancy, whelping and nursing, her system is bound to be a bit off.   I too would have expected the vet to give a shot to clear out any retained birthing material, at the time.   But if she's okay now, then she's okay!    You'd be thinking about worming the puppies, and her, at 2 weeks bit I'm not sure I'd rush into that if their stools are not right.   It does need to be done however.
