I have a large litter and they have done well on mum but will need to start weaning shortly - we are at day 19 - what is the recommended starter for puppies of  larger breed of dog

I start my medium breed at 18 days offering them a little puppy mush once a day, then twice the next three times and by 3 weeks offer them as much as they are happy to at 4 times a day.

For my medium sized breed (25-35kg adult weight) I use a teaspoonful of beef mince softened with a little warm water to start with.

We have always used a meat meal to start & not milk as they are getting that from the bitch. The meat is scraped rump steak, the size of a walnut, given to each puppy separately...this goes down very well  After a short time, we go onto mince beef...

I start at 2,5 weeks, offering soft raw mince wetted with some warm water which helps make it nice and slippery, mum continues to provide the milk, no extra is needed!

I wean onto a complete soaked and mix to a porridge using a goats milk based puppy milk.

Most owners these days will want to use some form of commercial complete.  I add meat and other foods at one meal a day so pups are used to a variety of foods.

I give the pups up to 1/4 pint of milk a day,  and stop giving milk by 6 weeks, as pups ability to digest milk wants as bitch led weaning progresses.

What I do (did!) is closest to how Brainless does this.   And I didn't need to start until the end of week 3, going into week 4.   I'm amazed how many people start the weaning process earlier to be honest, but then that's probably a breed thing.    I have always used goats milk and actually gave my heavy-boned breed this for longer than perhaps others do.   Mine had a mid-morning, mid-afternoon and last thing warmed drink.   I'd give lean raw mince (hamburger!), enough to cover a thumb nail, once a day much as it was tempting to do this more often earlier than ideal - it was so eagerly consumed.   But giving too much could upset immature dig.systems - and early on the biggest part of their nourishment was still coming from mum.

I would also add things like cottage cheese, scrambled egg and again raw mince - not all together .... just with different meals.

I know we all have different methods and beliefs of how to  wean our puppies and I do not mean to offend anyone so without too much detail this is how I do it.

At 2.5 weeks not a lot of solid is consumed if mum has plenty of milk, but the puppies learn about this new texture and taste and start to eat properly by 3 to 3.5 weeks.
I have never had upset tummies weaning onto raw it is what our dogs digestive systems are designed for (adults and puppies) I would never give a hamburger mixture to such young  puppies though.
Milky food is not needed as mum has a supply of the "correct" stuff. Getting the puppies onto a good biologically appropriate solid food is important, chicken wings/carcasses start at 5 weeks and thereafter a good selection of various meat products with a little grain free kibble added once daily just in case their new owners wish to use the kibble method of feeding.
Puppies are all weaned and independent of mum's milk for 1 week before leaving for their new homes.
