Topic Dog Boards / Health / Àrnica..how much is a dose?
- By saga Date 08.10.16 12:57 UTC
Hi. My gsp recently went lame on her front leg. Probably caused by awkwardly jumping from a high height! I rested her for a day and she was fine again. My question is should this happen again what is a dosage of 6c arnica pillules? I have purchased some just in case and see that 2 can be given every 2 hours regardless of weight....but this is for children and adults. This is another addition to my first aid box. So could someone can advise me (if the situation arises again!) of how many of these pillules to drop into her mouth to aid the healing? Thanks.

Your dog could easily cope with what it states, it is almost impossible to overdose. I give our Whippets the 30c at a dose of 3 to start with then in dose's of 2 each time.

I googled this question and the general answer is that it's impossible to overdose (as you've said!) thought a knowledgable person on this forum would know! Thankyou for your reply Lexy.:wink:

My vet is homeopathic as well as a conventional practice.
Arnica is a very safe product to use. Use as required.

Being interested in this question, I Googled and found the article linked here.   There are others!!!

I would just say that there's no more effective remedy than complete (crate?) rest to allow the injury to heal.    Feeling no pain can encourage an injured dog to do too much even if no animal should be in lots of pain of course.

MamaBas...thankyou for that link. The bit about how to administer proved very helpful. I have always rested a dog that is limping as you say the most effective remedy! I just wanted to add to my doggy first aid box so that if I couldn't get to a vet ( i.e if I was on holiday or it was a weekend) I could help with some natural pain relief. Hopefully as she gets older she won't be so headstrong and think before she leaps! (No such luck with a gsp!) thanks

I was under the impression that arnica was to reduce swelling and bruising rather than pain relief.

The best use of arnica is in its topical form to help alleviate sore muscles and bruising. It also has dramatic and demonstrable effects in the time period immediately after injury occurs, helping to cut down on symptoms of pain and strain in dogs.

Homeopathic arnica does all.the things mentioned  when bought t as cream to apply  topically it is the herbal.remedy which is slightly different but very good to use and has   similar uses .very handy  to have for.animals and Humans and use for any injuries. use as does for both humans and animals.regardless of size.i often use as frequently as every 30 mins for the first 6 doses then reduce  .I think Helios and ainsworths do some basic booklets to give advice on first on first aid  remedies. My bitch had arnica and other remedies to add to the pain relief the vet gave her after a spay. All went very well with nothing extra needed

My gsp recently went lame on her front leg. Probably caused by awkwardly jumping from a high height!

I had a fall a couple of years ago, - Zuma was mooching along behind me but on a long line and put a rabbit up about 2ft from his nose....inevitable result...me flat on floor:eek:
equivelant of my front leg and landing on wrist from a height

got home and took a couple of arnica pillules and a good slather of arnica cream, it made for much less swelling and bruising than expected but you do need to take/apply as soon as practical after the injury.

Homeopathic vet suggested giving arnica pillules after Zuma had abdominal surgery for suspected obstruction to lessen bruising/swelling which would speed healing of the wound
