Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Not in whelp ?
- By Stumpy [gb] Date 05.10.16 09:45 UTC
Hi

I mated my girl and unfortunately had nothing but slips ... so quick we was not hopeful .
We monitored her and kept track of days and are treating as if in whelp all though we presume not . Now days 45 / 49 and she has started humping my male . I've never experienced this behaviour before . Humping others only when due in season .
Anyone any insight on this ?

She has shown clingy , protective with food/more hungry behaviours but absolutely no physical signs of pregnancy and we believe she has not taken . Previously mated and went on to produce two healthy pups  .

Curious about the humping today ? :/

Can't help you re the humping at this point other then perhaps this is hormones.   But I can tell you that provided the time is right, the bitch is receptive and the male fertile, slip matings can work.   One of our boys never managed a tie but only missed to one of the bitches I let him mate with.   That wasn't that many but would suggest his not being able to die wasn't a problem much as breeders do prefer to see a tie.  And the one he missed to came back on her next season to my other male - they died.   She missed again.   Going to another outside stud the next time - she 'missed again'! (with apologies to Phil Collins!)   So that miss was clearly not my male's fault.

I understand slip matings can do go on to produce pups . We have had pups from the outcome of a slip previously .

However she has shown zero physical signs of pregnancy,  she is a small breed and would be easy to see signs .

Hormones causing the humping I would understand if she had of taken , is it possible for her to have another season so soon maybe ?  :/

Can you not get her scanned to see if she has? Nothing to say she will carry to term but you will know what's going on and a good scanner should detect if anything is amiss too

I could get her scanned but I don't see the point in bothering her . Of course if I believed she was poorly I would take her straight away however she is well in herself just this humping business has thrown me completely !

Has anyone else had a similar experience ? :/

My girl humped around this stage. She did not have any outward signs of pregnancy, but as I was about to book a holiday I got her scanned just for my own piece of mind. She was carrying a singleton....

That's interesting Darwinawards.
At what stage did your girl start showing signs with her singleton and did she go on to whelp pup herself ?

As lovely as it would be to have a pup I'd rather she was not in whelp with only one .

Did the humping persist throughout the remaining pregnancy?

Sods Law, as can happen with singletons, they tend to 'sit' and often it ends up with a C.Section because sitting means they get big and make a natural whelping less likely.   Frustrating.

That would be my worry mamabas

I had a litter of 10 born from only slip matings. Can't comment about the humping.

I just looked back on my comment ------ ooops. :red:     For 'die' read tie, and for 'died', read TIED!!   So sorry.   Sometimes my brain, or what's left of it, doesn't connect with my fingers.

One of my girls used to hump when she had a phantom pregnancy
