I was wondering what treats and chews it is okay to give a puppy.
Whenever we visit friends with dogs Darcy immediately steals their bones and pigs ears etc
Up to now I have always taken them off her but how old does she have to be before I can give her them?????

Hi there,
we have let Rufus have rawhide bones (uurrrghh could not bear to have pigs ears in the house) and shoes since he was about your puppies age (12 weeks i recall from a previous post).
Under supervision he also has smaller treats..puppy markies, milky biscuits etc..(all from pedigree chum puppy range)..but he only gets a fw a day..plus choc drop for each time he does a wee & poo in one outing to the yard (none for one or the other!)
Hope this helps..?

oh and huge pieces of raw fresh carrot under supervision...he lives gnawing at it!

will have to give the carrot a try. we are trying to help her with her teeth without offering our hands and feet as sacrifices.
So you're in your twenties as well then.
Dont know about you but my social life has taken a real nosedive since we got her.
What breed have you got?????

Our GSD always loved the ricesticks you can get for pups. When she was a bit older, we gave her the very thin
rawhide sticks.
Our breeder actually advised us to give her a fresh bone every week, and she does enjoy the meat :)
We only give her one every month or so.

ask your butcher if you can have a marrow bone... i wouldn't give any other kind of bone though as it may splinter, or chunks come off it adn be dangeerous if swallowed...

Rachael,
You butcher should be able to provide you with a nice fresh bone. Pig bones are the best, as they are the least likely to splinter.
What breed of dog do you have? I can imagine fresh bones are not really suitable for smaller breeds.

As said on a previous post, my pup loves his new Kong. its like a rubber, beehive shaped toy with a ole through the middle which you can stuff with treats. Not only does he get a nice tasting treat, but it also gives him something to do, and the rubber helps clean his teeth while he chews. I've been filling his with blended chicken, rice and carrot, but you can also put things in there like slices of ham, cheesey spreads etc and they just love it :D

We've got a lab who would chew our house down around us if we let her.
Am trying to get her something else to chew to try and take her attention away from the furniture

Hi
Mine love pigs ears and they're gone in about 10 minutes...rasks are nice for pups, good for them too.
I give pups empty milk containers and plastic pop bottles with the lids taken off, they love the crackling noise, just have to watch that they don't have a really good gnaw and get any bits off though.

Bones are the best in my view. They are cheap and the dogs keep on chewing them on and off all day and they last for ages. Downside is that they smell - but mine are only allowed them in the kitchen. I keep other treats for special occasions, so that the dogs feel that they are really getting something special and will do anything for them :)

Edited - bones keep their teeth very clean too :)
Do be careful with rawhide chews; I konw they are sold everywhere, but many on this site have had problems with dogs and rawhide chews, they don't seem to be that safe :(

I solved the smelly bones problem years ago. I let them have a good chew of the bones raw, and then collect them up, put them in a baking tray, qand roast them for 45 minutes at Gas Mark 9. I then get rid of the fat that has melted out, or put it on the food of anyone who is a bit skinny (I do have one fussy bitch).
I have found this way that the bones after they have got the grease licked off last indefinately in the house without smelling. they also don't seem to become brittle. I have done them like this for around 10 years!

the kong mentioned above is a great one as you can put all sorts inside! I use a smear of marmite! and our pup takes a long time to get his tongue in and sample the delight!
added to the fact he can also chew the rubber it is made of without damaging it it is a handy item! a chew & treat in one!!
If you search under "liver cake" from a previous post this came highly recommended & is a nice homemade treat !!
