Topic Dog Boards / Health / One Week Old Puppy Constantly Inhaling Milk

I have a one week old pup who until a few days ago was doing well. However she started inhaling her mums milk frequently. I took her to the vet who examined her and couldn't see any cleft or hear anything on her chest. Yesterday evening it happened quite badly again so she slept on me with her head lower than her rear. Had a feed off her mum at about 4am which went ok and went back to sleep on me. She tried a feed again near 7am but that didn't go well and I immediately took her to the vet. Again chest clear and she was OK by this time. He did however give her an antibiotic and anti inflammatory. Went home and everything was fine. She was in with her mum all day no problems then 4pm it happened again. She recovered. About an hour ago she went to suckle and instantly started gasping for air. This was a truly horrific episode, her tongue went blue and to be honest I didn't think she was going to survive. I managed to help her and she is still alive. If she survives the night I will be off to the vet again first thing.  I was thinking of using a dropper to feed her if she seems hungry during the night. Has anyone experienced this or able to offer advice. She had been gaining weight until this weekend but has actually lost some now. She is the only pup and was born c'section. Her sibling died in the womb :( I don't want this poor little thing to go through the hell she did earlier again and to be honest she barely survived it. Any advice appreciated.

It's good the puppy has been given antibiotics because milk aspiration can lead to pneumonia although if your vet has checked and her chest is clear, that's all good at the moment.    Clearly something isn't right with this puppy and there has to be a reason, usually cleft palate, for what's going on.   I think I certainly would take this puppy back because there may still be a very small cleft which is causing all this.

We had one, of an original 9, 4 lost after a C.Section was eventually done because they were too weak to survive by then, who was bottled by the staff before we got in to collect mum and her then 5 surviving puppies.   Stupidly they were bottling them when in fact all they needed at that stage was warmth and to be able to gather their strength after their shocking (and it was shocking) start in life.   By the time we got them home, milk was coming from his nose and despite all our efforts, he didn't survive.

Just to add if she's a singleton puppy now, perhaps mum is producing more milk than she can easily handle and is perhaps taking in too much, too fast?   And I'd be worried if her only sibling was DOA.

Hoping you pull this little one through.   Breeding can be so hard at times.
