Our GWP is due in a week or so and is HUGE!!!. I have just found out that her Mum had a caesarian for 13 pups the last time. First pup would not deliver. She also had a previous section but am not sure why. On top of that her aunt also had a caesar but again I am unsure why. Is this likely to be a problem passed on. I am going to call my vet tomorrow but just wondered if anyone else had similar experience.

Hi Star, don`t have any experience of them, but I have read that certain conditions like uterine inertia that causes the bitch to have a c/section can be hereditary. I think it depends on the reason for c/sections & it would be helpful if you could find out why her mum & aunt had them.

christines right if thats what caused it------butother than that i know bitches that produce a litter normally-then need a ceasar next time etc, other than inertia its not easy to know, good luck,

One of my bitches had a c section for her third and last litter in 2001 when she was just over 6 1/2 years old, there were only 4 pups, and she had been in first stage for 48 hours, and was overdue, but not getting anywhere (inertia). Her first litter was Oct 97 and second Nov 98 and she delivered 8 and 7 pups respecitvely no problem, though she was restless and panting (first stage) for a full 24 hours!

I whelped a bitch for friends in the breed, and she had unfortunately a bout of enteritis half way through pregnancey (before coming to me) and was very off her food, and I had to force feed her. She had secondary Inertia, as she was run down, but did well after they were born, but needed Calcium, as had no reserves!

In these cases I think it was jus5 unfortunate circumstances. but where there is a family pattern of C sections for the same reason it could be familial!

Her mothers first caesarian was uterine inertia, second litter ok and last litter she had a caesar because bitch was distressed.(whatever tha means!!). I am already biting my nails .

She may still have a normal whelping. Don`t have a link on it but I`ll see if I can find anything for you.

This kinda ties in with the 'Due Today' posting(s). The bitch ended up with a caesarean but coincidentally (or not) so did the other two bitches in the litter who have whelped. The owner will not be breeding from her again.

Hi, I have had a look around but haven`t been able to come up with anything yet. The book I have read on it does say not to breed from bitches with it tho. Saying that, each whelping is different & you have to be really sure it`s inertia as I`ve also been told some bitches will delay whelping if they are stressed/not happy about the place they are having pups in etc. Difficult!!!

thanks Christine. She is due on Tuesday so we will just keep a close eye on her. Her temp is stable at the moment so I don't think anything is going to happen just yet. She is so big tho' and cannot get comfortable. Will keep you posted
