My brother mentioned today that he read somewhere (a while ago) that neutering can shorten a dog's life by a couple of years, but he couldn't remember exactly for what reason. Has anyone else heard of this before? Thinking about it, I really can't imagine how it would shorten a life. Be interested in your opinions!

I'd have thought that it could actually lengthen a dogs life in most cases, especially when it comes to the big 'C'!

My first dog was castrated and he lived to be 16 years old!

my vet said it can increase life span, as it lessens risk of prostate problems etc..

I cannot see it shortening..but what do I know :-)

Well, I'm glad no-one thinks there's any truth in it, esp since my last dog was neutered. Although he died at almost 5, it wasn't anything to do with that! I'd hate to think I was shortening a dog's life, but had not heard of this before my brother read it, though I simply couldn't imagine how it would affect a lifespan! Probably nothing to worry about then!

The only way I can think of it shortening a dogs life is if the dog becomes incontinent, and the available drugs do not solve the problem, and the owner deciding they can't live with the constant smell of urine!
