Our girl is now 6 weeks pregnant. Just wondering if many people bother having a second scan? The first obviously confirmed the pregnancy. The vet could see 2 pups. I have read this isn't always accurate. Do you think it's worthwhile booking a second scan to confirm numbers or is it not needed? She also has really bad wind. Is this normal? We have complimented her (puppy) kibble with extra protein such as chicken, tuna & eggs. So I presume that's the cause but it's pretty bad. Finally, we have two children. Our girl seems to completely keep out the way of my youngest child now. They are usually the best of friends but now she's pregnant she can't really be bothered with him. What's the best plan for bringing up pups with children in the home especially once the pups are here?

When I booked the scan for mine, I wasn't sure but by the time the scan date came, I knew but decided to carry on just to confirm my suspicion.
All I wanted to know was she in whelp, for me there is no point in having a 2nd scan.

The children(& yourselves) must realise that the bitch could have a temperament change, particularly once the pups are born...she will get very protective, which you as a mum should understand. Mum & pups should have time alone(away from the children) to bond & sleep/suckle.

You will have to be guided by your bitch as to when the children can approach the whelping box, all my bitches have been totally relaxed with my children and family in fact one of my GSD bitches went to get the postman to show him her babies!  However, this is not the case with all new mums even if they are the sweetest tempered, keep the children at a safe distance until you are sure that she is not showing any signs of stress and don't be tempted to take her out and let the puppies be handled.  Warning signs include, being very still when approached, licking her lips, half flattened ears, low growling or standing up and looking protective, children and adults really need to respect the boundaries as bitches can become so stressed that they try to move their puppies or even at worst case injure them.

Generally though I think most bitches are very good with visitors so don't get too worried about it, just watchful.

Think you would be too late now to have a scan to confirm numbers.  Mine are fine with my own kids and visitors early on but as everyone else has said be guided by your bitch.  Be careful with the amount of tuna you are feeding, I know pregnant woman are advised to have no more than 2 small cans per week due to the mercury content.

I think you may be a little late now to scan for numbers.

As for raising a litter with children- I have 3 children, 9, 4 and 1 so quite young! My bitch is expecting her second litter, her previous litter was last year when my middle child was 3. They are the best of friends normally but what I did last year (and will again this time) is I turned my dining room into a puppy room, put a baby gate across the door and then the whelping box inside a puppy pen. My children were only allowed supervised access, and I was careful showing the puppies to my 3yo, as it happens he was incredibly calm and my bitch welcomed him just an hour after they were born and he sat next to her quietly as she fed them- memories to treasure! He was still only allowed in a couple of times a day so as to not disturb her too much.
The novelty wore off a bit when they reached about 6 weeks old with needle teeth and claws!

Thanks for your wonderful advice regarding having children around. We have rearranged the dining room also & put the welping box in there. I will get the baby gates out of the loft to limit access by the children. I didn't know whether I should keep them away all together for a few days but we'll play it by ear and I'll definitely look out for the signs you have mentioned. Thanks again
