Since my pups were not wormed during pregnancy, should I worm at 2 weeks?  Or wait till we start weaning or solids at 3wks?  All things being equal, I'd prefer the latter, but the Book of the Bitch has just worried me by saying that 2 weeks/14 days is the time when mature roundworms can be found in puppy poop!  (Which is perhaps why the conventional advice is 2wks?)

Other question:  When you worm pups, do you also worm mum?  (If you don't, can they be reinfected by her or by her milk??)  Should mum be wormed every time pups are wormed, or just the first time or just the last time or what?! My bitch doesn't tolerate wormers well - they give her a tummy ache - and I'm a bit reluctant to add that to everything she's dealing with at the mo, so would like to avoid worming her when the pups first are, if I can.

PS I have both Panacur paste and Drontal Puppy at the ready, not sure which I'll use yet.

I worm pups with Drontal at 2,4 and 6 weeks. Pups are then due wormed again when they first visit the vet with their new owners at 8 weeks.  I worm the mum the day after worming the pups every time.

I do the same, except I vary the worming products.  I always worm Mum at the same time.  Also at 8 weeks.  I use Welpan and Milbemax.  Some prefer Panacur, of course.  I'm afraid of it.  Probably silly of me.

Goldenmum, can I ask why you worm mum the day after the pups and not the same day?  Is there a reason?

I have a couple more questions:

- If I worm pups, and mum is still eating their poo, is mum not getting wormer through their poo which might mean she has too much if I also worm her??
- Equally, if I worm mum, aren't the pups going to get wormer in their milk??  (Possibly of a different kind, if I worm pups with Drontal Puppy and mum with Panacur...)??  I'm assuming all of this is ok?

I have just attempted to understand the dosages for each. 

-  If I'm right, Drontal Puppy is 1ml per kg.  In which case the pups need to be at least 1kg to use it? 
-  The Panacur syringe leaflet is ridiculous.  It talks about how many syringe graduations to give, and then it has this really ridiculous diagram of what a graduation is and what 2 graduations are, and I really don't understand... How, in their diagram, is that 1 syringe graduation??  It's half a graduation?  And their 2 graduations, is one, in my book?  Unless they are using both the bumps on the side AND the black lines and not just the black lines - but that would be stupid??!  I'm very confused now... What is one syringe graduation?!

I don't think most people would realise that and pups would end up with twice the amount...

Yup, which is why because I do the pregnancy thing.

I feel I can wait the extra week for pups to have to cope with it, as after all they are strong chemicals, but a heavy worm burden can cause permanent damage, so You have to weigh things up.

I use the liquid, much more economical (have to do Mum and the other dogs too) and able to dose more accurately.  Also prefer to have to physically give the smaller more concentrated form, rather than bulkier paste.

I use the liquid too....pull it into a syringe and pop it in the mouth......down it goes no problems.

I hate worms and would do anything to eradicate them....I couldn't bare to think my puppies or bitches had any kind of burden.

Just what I had been advised and have always done.  If a pup is 0.7 kg for example them they would receive 0.7 ml.

Not with the 10% liquid though, the dose is 0.5ml per kg bodyweight, daily for three days

what if the puppy weighs 1.37kg? how do you work it out for the 'less than  a kilo' grams?

I work with Drontal, 1 dose at 2,4 and 6 weeks and it is 1ml per kg

A pup at 1.37kg would get 1.37ml of Drontal (just under 1.4ml

And also, if over 3 day period, do you worm by daily weight or weight on the 1st day?

I'd do daily weight.  I don't know about the liquid, but the syringe says 'up to 1kg use x syringe graduations, 1-2kgs, use x syringe graduations' etc.
