Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / CHV Vaccine....I am FURIOUS!!!!
- By midnightvelvet Date 13.06.16 17:59 UTC Edited 14.06.16 11:34 UTC Upvotes 1
As many will remember, I had my bitch given the first of her CHV jabs at the end of April just before I mated her...well not ME, but the chosen sire !
Today I called to book an appointment for Weds which will be more or less 2 weeks before she is due to  whelp.  Guess what???  THEY DON'T HAVE ANY!!!!
They have been ringing around to try and get some but nobody out of the ten vets they asked had any in stock.
To say I am revving is an understatement!  This vaccine comes in a pack of the two doses therefore they must have been using the vials in a first come first served basis....if you see what I mean, instead of keeping the doses together.  Not only is it leaving me without my girls 2nd jab, but it means that they have been wantonly injecting different batches of vaccine to the bitches who've had it!!  If ever anything went wrong, how would they trace the batches back to the bitches involved?????
I am seriously not happy!!!

Problem with stockists and won't be available until Oct apparently.  It will be a case of ringing round more vets beyond your area in the hope someone has them in stock
- By JoStockbridge [gb] Date 13.06.16 18:27 UTC
When my girl came into season I called the vet to make sure they had it in stock and let them know we wanted it as we planned to use it after maiting. They told me they would reserve one for me and hold it to make sure it wasn't used. As I know they have alot of breeders go to them and I had heard of other people's vets running out.

Some people on a Facebook page are saying it's aperantly out of stock till October, a problem with the supplier there saying.

You may have to travel out of your area if you realy want it.

The same thing happened to me and I now have a bitch due puppies in less than two weeks and have no protection from the herpes virus!  Absolutely stomping mad, especially as I pay £50+ for each one prior to it being ordered and they haven't even offered a refund yet!!!!!!
What on earth is going on?  Can anyone tell me if their vet stocks it?  Or anyone any good advice for protection of the pups with alternative methods?
- By Nimue [ch] Date 13.06.16 19:35 UTC
Same thing happened to me here in Switzerland once.  From then on I have been very careful.

Yes i was told that it's outstock until Oct by VRS , so i fone  my vets told him he said he's going to fone around as he has only the 1 that i've already paid for but what's 1 without the other !!! I was told that it's only one company that makes & supplies CHV and there out of stock
- By Hazenaide [gb] Date 13.06.16 19:38 UTC
I know my vet gets it in the next day after I order?
As far as I know each time is the same so not sure about the different batch thing?
My bitch missed so we did not need the 2nd vaccine but she had the first. That was in March.
People were saying then there was a problem but my vet got it in as usual.
- By Luvstaff [gb] Date 13.06.16 19:41 UTC
I got told it's only the one company that make & supply CHV & out stock until Oct ,

Yes, they're telling me October as well which is no good to me!  But what I am most mad about it that she's had the one, so there should be a spare one left as they come in a two dose pack.  They must have realised that they would be short come the second dose with how many are logged as used!!    I wasn't told there was a problem at the time of the first vaccination which was at the end of April.....what am I supposed to do??
If anything goes wrong with these puppies I shall hold them totally responsible!!!!
- By midnightvelvet Date 13.06.16 19:58 UTC Edited 14.06.16 11:35 UTC
You're in the exact situation as me then.....surely if they have given one vaccination to a bitch they would automatically make sure the second one will be available??  How hard is it to count in two's when doing a drugs check???
You try to do the best you can by your dogs then the VET lets you down!!! :yell:

If you can't get any it could be worthwhile ringing Ainswoths and asking about alternatives.  I've had a quick look and they do some for horses and people.  They're really helpful on the phone.
- By midnightvelvet Date 13.06.16 23:35 UTC Edited 14.06.16 11:35 UTC
Thanks for that but I wouldn't like to use an alternative in case her body reacts to a mix of vaccines.  I mean, if I knew for sure she had it I might have done that but not worth the risk with  her not showing any evidence.

And the vet STILL hasn't called me back!!!!!
- By gsdowner Date 14.06.16 07:49 UTC
I was in exactly in the same situation last week and my girl is due this coming Sunday. I was in the vet's car park Monday morning while they spent an hour and a half looking for the 2nd vile. It failed to turn up and they claim that it wasn't used by anyone else. They then re-ordered it with some difficulty for the next day. They did mention it was a struggle but I had been lucky. My girl however, had the ordeal of two car trips on two of the hottest days of the year so far, has been panting as though she is over heating and loose poo ever since.

So as far as I am aware, my girl has had 2 vaccines with different batch numbers...

I had a problem getting it when I mated a bitch at the end of last year, but my vets have been able to get it in for the one I'm planning to mate in the next week or so. They always get 2 at a time for me and store it with my name on it. I guess I'm lucky.
- By spinwon [gb] Date 14.06.16 11:47 UTC
I had the same problem with my vets not being able to get the vaccine 2 weeks ago so I went to a vets that a lot of breeders use and they had it in stock and said there was no problem getting hold of more (it was Rufford Vets near Wigan).
- By rocoher [gb] Date 14.06.16 14:34 UTC
They do this every year! we all scrabble to find some, i don't know why but it sure is frustrating.
My sister has a bitch due next week. Luckily our vet does keep them together in batches and has saved hers, she has another 'set' of CHV and my bitch has just come in to season so i paid for that upfront and I am taking it home with me tomorrow ( i dont want them to accidently give it to someone else!) when my sisters bitch goes in for hers.

My vet just gets single doses and I order it a week beofe it is needed. Only had a problem once about  Sept last year when My vac has been used for someone else (allegedly). I then went to another and managed to get it. I actually sat in my vet's waiting room, ringing round to find out who had some. No problem now, I fact had my girl vaccinated today.

PHEW!!!   I am pleased to report that my vet managed to secure three doses of the vaccine from another vet but because of the shortage, they say they wouldn't be able to have any more.  Luckily they only needed three, one of which was mine so Flops is having her 2nd CHV jab tomorrow!!  What a relief
- By midnightvelvet Date 17.06.16 22:27 UTC Edited 18.06.16 15:30 UTC
So my girl is all vaccinated and scanned and we just have two weeks to wait for B day

The scanner I used today - as in the operator not the machine LOL - saw a definite four possibly 5 pups  and pointed out the spines and heart beats etc...it was wonderful.  I would definitely recommend her and I shall use her again for any future pregnancies.
Poor old Flops is getting heavy and tired now....she never walks anywhere but runs and she usually throws herself over doorsteps etc but when she tried tonight, she couldn't quite make it so I'm glad there's only the two weeks to go now.

Has Rabid's girl produced yet does anyone know?
- By rabid [je] Date 17.06.16 22:57 UTC
No!  Not due till Tues/Weds

- By gsdowner Date 18.06.16 12:18 UTC
I bet she goes Sunday, that she has 9 pups, 4 boys and 5 girls, 3 will be yellow and she will be done by 11.30pm

:lol::lol::lol: :twisted: :lol::lol::lol:
- By rabid [je] Date 18.06.16 12:50 UTC Edited 18.06.16 12:55 UTC
Umm!!

No sign of anything yet.  She's just lying around sleeping like a beached whale.  I feel very sorry for her and like she must be bored out of her skull....

I just got given a load more old sheets and towels, so will be washing all those on 90 degrees now...

She always digs around in her bed in the middle of the night (even when not pregnant), to rearrange blankets and make her bed, and now, every time she does that, I wake up and listen until she's gone back to sleep again.  Last night I couldn't go back to sleep so was awake from 3-5am....

Tomorrow I'm supposed to be nipping out for a quick Father's Day brunch, but if she's showing any signs of anything, I'm not going...

Edited to add:  She is breathing pretty heavily, whilst she lies here.  It's like really deep sleep breathing - except she's not in deep sleep.  But she seems very relaxed besides that, and ate breakfast as normal.
- By gsdowner Date 18.06.16 13:53 UTC
Don't think refusing breakfast is a solid sign....both of my girl's ate their breakfast - in fact my last girl polished her's off at 7.30 and then proceeded to bully everyone else out of theirs....1st pup arrived 1.30pm!

Even current mum ate her's - albeit only half but she did eat and then had her 1st at 10.51am :)
- By rabid [je] Date 18.06.16 14:29 UTC
Ok, that's good to know.  I think my girl might be breathing more heavily because there's less room for her lungs, with all the pups in there... She's not hot...
- By Nimue [ch] Date 18.06.16 16:05 UTC
Rabid, so glad to see that you are back!  I still think of you on that ferry.  Such a great story to follow, with the grande finale just days away!
- By rabid [je] Date 18.06.16 16:32 UTC Upvotes 2
I'm only back because I thought all you people who'd given me help, deserved to know the outcome.... which might be soon - I'll start a new thread....
