Zoey is a 13 month old Lab. She went into heat for the first time. I know that 13 months is to young to have puppies thats why I have had her to the vet 3 times already. She is in a fenced in yard outside and the yellow lab down the street got in there with her. They didn't get tied from what we saw but he got her anyway. The lady the has the yellow lab doesn't want to help with anything....she said its not her problem. I didn't like what she said so I called the local animal control and they cant do anything either. I didn't want to have her fixed so I will be having 3 puppies in a few weeks. My husband and I are going to keep all the puppies and have them fixed as soon as we can. The vet did the ultrasound today and she only saw 3 puppies is this normal.....it seems like a small litter to me.
Donelle :o)
PS. I'm just wanted to say I'm sorry to the person I reply to I have never been on a list and didn't know I couldn't do that. I can tell you it wont happen again SORRY!! :o)

Don't rely on there only being 3. On one of my bitches my vet saw only 5 and she had 8 in total. Have you decided where she is to have the puppies yet?

You would not believe how much reading I have done. My husband and I made a whelping box and she is now sleeping in it. she is 5 weeks along and I plan to take her back to the vet at 50 days for and X-ray.

Well it sounds like the pups are going to have a wonderful upbringing with you! Don't cut down on her exercise just yet the fitter she is the better she should be at whelping time. Don't forget to keep us posted as to how it goes :D

One of my previous GRs was from a litter conceived in the same circumstances, it was the bitches first season & a beautiful male GR cleared a 6 foot fence to get in with her. Luckily the dog's owner took responsibility for his actions and helped out with the litter.
There were 9 pups born and mum coped very well with them and there were no real health problems, my boy lived to 14, despite having a slight heart murmer, but he was the only one that did.
Not something I'd recommend but this was over 20 years ago when people weren't so clued up on things.

Well I think you two are both lucky that the 2 dogs that got to your bitches are of the same breed as your bitches. Knowing my luck, if it happened to me mine would be the local Heinz Variety from down the road! :D
Just think it could have been your little poodle with a St. Bernard! Gosh it does not bear thinking about!! :-)

I have often been told that they can see 3, as that is usually how many they can see at a time in the scanner window. I have actually had them deliver 7 to 9 pups.
How far advanced is the pregnancy, as you could still have the bitch spayed and the pups taken away.
It is very likely that she will have 6 to 8 pups, and finding suitable loving homes for them all wil be quite a job and worry. Also rearing the litter will be quite a drain on your bitch, and on your time and finances.

i should think if your bitch was on your own property, and the yellow lab got in and mated her, -that you could sue the yellow labs careless owner!!!!!cant believe she doesnt want to get involved--doesnt want to take responsibilty for her dog either, :(

I know I was in shock when I talked to the RUDE lady. I have never let my dogs out without a leash. I have many dogs that come around here but none of them have ever got in the fence. My husband told me to bring all the girls in the house until he does some work on the fence. I have a 14 week old Lhaso Apso and a mut that I got from walmart.

Hi Luvin Zoe
Welcome to the Board! OK - so things have started badly, but, from what I have seen from your postings so far, you want to do things right from now on, so good on you girl!!!
I'd agree with Brainless - although the scan only shows three, you should expect more - our scan showed "between 3 & 5" and we had 7!
You may have to help with the puppies a lot more than you would have to with a more mature bitch - she may not be mature enough emotionally (I know what babies labs are) to cope, so you might have to open the sacs, rub the puppies dry, etc as well as keep putting her back in with them, cleaning botties, etc, until her hormones kick in completely and she takes over - so be prepared! On the other hand, I remember a school friend (over 40 years ago!) whose labrador had puppies on her first birthday, and although my friend and I were all prepared to be foster mothers, we weren't allowed a look-in by mum, who did everything herself - but it is best to be prepared.
I see from another posting that you have got the Book of the Bitch - it really is an absolute godsend - it becomes vital bedside reading!
Try, if possible, now, to get a list of people who want puppies so that you do have homes for more than the numbers that you are anticipating - it really is better to disappoint good prospective owners than just letting pups go to anyone in desparation. Believe me (and here speaks the voice of current experience) two 15 week old puppies can be hell on earth, if they feel like it!! - and we planned to keep two!
Anyway, good luck, keep posting on here, you will get lectures still as people read your posts for the first time, and believe me, what worries us, is you finding the right homes for the puppies to go to - there are too many unloved dogs out there now.
One last point concerns me about your posting - does Walmart really sell puppies in the US?
Regards
Margot

lol@you.....no Wal-mart doesnt sell puppies.....a lady had a box of puppies that were covered in dog poop and I just couldnt stand to see the puppies like that......so my mother-inlaw took 3 puppis I got one and she took 2. The dog is now really healthy and happy :0
Hello
I didn't see the thread on which you originally posted as it was removed before I could see your reply to my posting.
My reaction to your first posting was a gut reaction, how your post read it sounded as if if was a planned mating, now you have explained what happened I can feel for both you and your little girl, but can I ask you why if you saw the yellow lab with her did you not take her to the vet straight away and get a mismate injection?
I hope you and your girl come through this OK.
Jayne

Unfortunately in my experience very few people outside dog circles have ever heard of the morning after jab, or that a bitch can be spayed:( after mismating

HI, just a thought: If she does have a litter of several pupies, which is very likely, are you still planning to keep them all? It will be an almost impossible task to run on more than a couple of puppies without extensive facilites and a bottomless wallet and will be more than a full time job for one person to care for and train and socialise them all. You will need outside kennnels and a few different runs as you really cant keep a whole litter running together for very long, dogs and bitches will have to be seperated and some may bully others and need to be kept in compatable pairs . With a litter of 8 this means 4 huge outside runs. They are so cut and easy at 8 weeks but a whole litter of quickly growing puppies is a different matter.
The vaccinations alone for a whole litter will cost you a huge amount of money, let alone to feed and rear them all, together with possible future vets bills. Sadly without AKC or KC registration and no hip/eye scores for both the parents they will not be worth very much and if they turn out blind or with hip displacia the new owners could sue you. Hope you dont mind me saying this, but I know that early scans are notorious, as previously mentioned, for under estimating the number of puppies. I would have a Plab B if I were you. What will you do if she does have many more than the vet counted? I am not trying to be unpleasant, just realisistic. :-) . If she has a noticebly big tummy by 5 weeks then you have a large litter on the way imo. I wish you the best of luck

I know that it will take time and money to keep them all.....my mother wants a puppie and so does my Aunt......I dont like that my aunt want one for an outside dog to kill animals to come around so I told her no way.....my mother on the other hand wants one because Zoey is VERY good with people and love kids. I do plan on looking for people to take the pups after reading everything.......I dont want just anyone getting a puppy. Thanks To all of you that have reply.

Just by looking at her I would never know......If i didnt see the dog going at it I wouldnt know nothing. Her boobs are a lil bigger and hanging down more but that all. She is in my face 24/7 she is 80 lbs and thinks she is still a lap dog :0) She goes with mommy everywhere now just cause she doesnt want to be alone.
I feel so helpless and hope I'm ready for what is going to happen on or around 3/23/03. Zoey doesnt really care to eat.....she wants what mommy has and I have to make her eat by putting stuff in her food. I put her on puppy food a week ago and she still doesnt want to eat.
She loves to go outside and roll in the snow......I have to make her come in the house so she doesnt get to cold. My poor puter is on overload......I havent been on this thing in months and now its never off. I would like to talk to a breeder so that I feel more ready for all this....My name is Donelle I live in the us (Missouri) my number is 573-883-3908 if you can help in any way please feel free to call me. I only work 2 hrs in the am and 2 hrs in the pm. Thanks again all of you!!!!!!! :0)

I didnt know anything about a mismate thing.....I took her to the vet about 3 weeks after that and I was told yes she is having puppies.......I then took her back last week 2 times one for the ultrasound and one just for another check-up.....Like I said I dont know ANYTHING about breeding or whelping.......I have spent the last 3 weeks online reading everything I can find. People have also told me to get her fixed now and kill the puppies...I just can't do that.

Are you over the top or what. Its not rocket science, you will get the dog wound up the way your reacting, and believe me, if your not over the top now, keeping all the pups ought to do it!!

It is a shame but perhaps for the best. This normally happens for a good reason.
