Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Bitch went 40 days & miscarriage!!
- By Luvstaff [gb] Date 04.06.16 20:38 UTC
HI
we decided to have litter from our homebred bitch she was breed from litter for hoping at least 1 puppy would go on to show ! Lucky we got bitch that went on to do well at all level off shows & classes , qualified for Crufts, as she was doing well at the shows we decided, that her next season she would be month short of 3 years, we decided to breed from her hoping again to keep puppy back again for ourselves, (also had people a lot interest in the litter!

This is what happen so hope for some advice ! our bitch is maiden  came into season ( we have our own intact stud to see when bitch are at their highest) bitch is taking to a very experience stud ( lovely lines ) He's Champion nearly 10 years they had his sperm tested ok slowing up a bit , owner of the stud dog did tell us this and that 3 mating would be ok ( i have no problem with this us they been up front   , we arrive let the bitch out of the car on lead after the journey to stretch her legs & do her business, she taken to stud after few minutes  20 mins tie , all happy, we went back 48hrs tie 30 minutes  & 60hrs final mating 45 minutes ties, we didn't give CHV to bitch ( should have we)
Approx 37 days she's gone off her food everything & anything !! drinking fine normal ,no sickness on the 39 day i notice her tuck /flak looked a bit bigger! Right i take her to vets next morning got up in the early hours of the next day 40, i could smell horrible smell went down she been bleeding cleaning herself the blood was smelly & brownness , straight to vets vet say she miscarriage! gave jab & course antibiotics, after fews hours blood stops then approx 5 days smell again but very little blood, see different vet 2 lots different tablets, again have to go back to vet no smell spotting very small amounts normal colour blood vet does ( blood test shown infection ) which we know it would & scan showed a very little amount fluid i think vet said in uterus & again 2 different lots tablets, its been week since we last been back to vets course tablets complete, fingers cross blood stopped & no more ! I ve noticed her appetite has grown she's not putting weight on only getting back into shape ! & her due date would have been approx 6/6/16,
I ve ask my vet on her last  check up possibilities of her doing it again if we was to try and breed her again! he did not want to commit himself! so has anyone had problem like this with their bitch & gone on to breed again successfully, if so advice on how you went about it please

 That's awful :(

It could have been anything, really - maybe pyo or infection?  It sounds a bit late to be caused by herpes, as I think that causes infertility earlier on and miscarriages before you even know they're pregnant - as well as fading puppies. But defo get the herpes jab next time, just in case!  Maybe your vet would also prescribe ABs before mating, given the history??

So sorry to hear your loss

Thanks
If we do i will give CHV & ask about Antibiotics, she do in season august/sept
Just question i forgot to mention i been told i can go back and use the same older stud dog  ? I did think about using different younger 15 months unproven dog ! again its lovely line ! or i use proven dog between 2 years & 5 years with reasonable good line to my bitch !

I had a bitch before I knoew about CHV. Scanned for large litter. All going well - getting bigger etc.
Precisely at 6 weeks I realised that her shape had changed most definitely suddenly smaller.
We lost the entire litter and now always have the chv jab. It was devastating especially as we had seen the puppies on scan.

Very sorry to hear about this. Personally I would be contacting a repro vet about this and whether she needs to be checked for anything else going on and aside from giving the herpes vaccination is there anything else you need to consider. They may suggest getting her swabbed before mating to check for any infections and may suggest a course of abs before or after mating.
I would take the advice of a good repro vet before embarking on mating her again.

I have emailed repro last night , so hopefully i will get to speak to vet that does repro! Monday ! if i to go ahead with mating on the advice of Repro vet
I will get all the advice first before making any decision!

Question do i use the same 1st  stud used ( has he be 10.1/2 years old by the time my bitch comes back into season ! the owners have no problem !
or do i cut my loser and  pay to use younger unproven dog !
or again pay fee to use proven dog between 2 & 7 years old

You obviously really like this dog, he done his job last time, your girl was in whelp so I see no reason why you shouldn't try again with him.

our bitch is booked into see VRS, next week fingers cross first and foremost that there nothing:evil: going on that will affect her health , that we don't know about ! then if that's fine question is do we give her try again at mating !
I have my list of questions , its going to feel a long week,

Just a bit of advice ,
if you've read my earlier . posts then your have idea whats happen!

Today the bitch has clearish stringy discharge NOT smelly not a lot but now and again  she keeps licking to clean herself paying a afar bit addition to her rear end & she licking her bed where's she's been sitting  , but she also seems to be nesting !!! There's no hair loss around teats or swollen or milk! her appetite been very good since her last visit to vet some while ago  in fact increased, but then went normal , but today she only ate  half,  is she just going through phantom !

Just spoke to vets nothing to worrying about ! without going into to much details its her body doing it's normal thing!

Just update our bitch has today seen VRS, and had tested & swabs done , so pleased but  best result was our bitch within herself is healthy & nothing undiscovered Everything is fine lovely  , we been told it's there's no reason not to bred from her and if so it best to mate her naturally  when she next comes into season!
- By gsdowner Date 13.06.16 13:21 UTC
That's lovely to hear. Glad she's ok.

update
previously due to problems last time  we took our bitch for health check & tests that all were clear and was advised by the vet to try mating again ! so we had her   progesterone testing taken by VRS, then we got call from vrs and advise and we took our bitch on when  to take bitch to stud ( he's proven ) 2 ties on both days, just had the bitch scanned nothing!! she mates easy , she must give of the right scents as the stud dog we used  their other males go crazie whilst we was there & owners said that even just before we get to their property the dogs start, even our male  when our bitch comes into season after so many days into her season for approx 5 days when she's seems to be at her rippest our male howls doesn't settle then after this period he settles down,
Owner said we can have repeat mating, this time i will use my male tail tail signs to as when he begins  and starts his howling and persist wincing i then will take her to the stud dog,

Oh how awful for you. Are the vets sure she is actually ovulating with viable eggs or just going through the motions? As in giving off the right scent, hormones changing and surging but without actual viable eggs?

I really feel for you as I went through this with 5 misses to 2 different bitches and it turns out we were going too late for one girl (ovulates day 7-8) and the stud wasn't the right match for the second girl. We finally had 2 healthy litters this year but there has been a lot of heartache to get here.

Keeping fingers crossed for you that you will get the result you are hoping for soon x

> we were going too late for one girl (ovulates day 7-8)

Happened to me at 3 consecutive seasons with a bitch I have.  Vet said to test from day 1 in the end.  She ovulated on day 4!!!!!!

Thanks , I glad it workouted out for you, I changed the stud dog , i ve have intact stud dog here that only shows interest only at certain time when the bitch is in season , we still have time to make a decision before she comes back into season,
