So my pups will be due for their first worming on Monday (2 weeks), I used panacur from day 40 in pregnancy, and was going to use this for them.  Having trawled through the worming posts, I'm now unsure if I should.  There seems to be several people who have had issues using it, what do people think/advise.

As I do the bitches from day 40 I wait until pups are three weeks and have started on weaning foods.

I wormed mum before being mated.   I then wormed the litter from 2 weeks of age, using a gentle worming syrup and mum too at this point, using a normal wormer.   Puppies were then wormed every 2 weeks to the time they went home, their owners armed with a full history of worming, when done and with what for their vet to see.   I advised they reworm at around 3 months.   I prefered not to worm my mums during their pregnancy.

I'll be doing what Brainless says - worming at 3 weeks, when they start solids.

The old fashioned syrup only tackles adult worms so needs to be administered more often.

The newer medications like Panacur especially deal with the larval stages, so are given a little less often.

I Panacur my pups at 2 weeks and every 2 weeks after.  And this is the tiniest breed you can get, so pups are really weenie!  In many, many years I have never had a problem and would recommend Panacur to anyone who would listen.

Thanks everyone, I think I'll go with the panacur as I have it, and used it during pregnancy with no problems.

Oh heavens I can't win around here can I.   Fact is I used Sherleys Worming Syrup which hits roundworm and fact is none of my puppies ever had a worm problem.   And none of our puppies had any problems with being wormed every 2 weeks to the time they went home.   Sigh!!

But then I'm so old now and clearly didn't have any idea about what I was doing through all the time we were breeding our occasional litters !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry Mamabas, no criticism meant.

Just pointing out that the syrup is not as effective a wormer, and doesn't tackle the immature forms, so needs to be given more often as you have done.

Personally I prefer the alternative 3 day courses that I give at 3 and 7 weeks, having dosed the dam for last 3 weeks of pregnancy.

The method is different, the results  hopefully the same.

Though for bitch pups the lower possibility of encysted larva staying in her tissues is hopefully less to pass on to her pups.
