Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Something terrible has happened :(

Last night I had a terrible experience with my pregnant girlie. We were accosted - for want of a better word - by a drunk as we were out for our evening walk. We had just turned back and were walking past the social club when this man staggered out and starting screaming and shouting at us and banging a type of stick thing. It was so sudden and out of the blue my poor girl wet herself. Thankfully my boy stood in front of us and went ballistic. I had to let go of his lead in order to stop myself from falling on top of my girl when she tried to hide behind me. He stood his ground and barked until the commotion brought more people out.

The secretary of the club was livid that a member would behave in such a way. He assured me that the drunk will be barred and the incident has been reported to the local pcso but I am so concerned for my poor girl. She has been subdued since last night and has refused her breakfast. I rang the out of hours vet as soon as I got in and he told me to watch her as she might start aborting :( I have been in tears most of the night and am scared for her. She had a small amount of warm milk with a beaten egg and shredded cooked chicken last night but she wasn't enthusiastic about it.

At the time I was so shocked I just stood there effing and blinding at the prat but I think it's beginning to sink in now that I may be facing the loss of some if not all of the litter :( We started walking her with my boy in the evenings because she doesn't enjoy rambling with the others at the moment, I wish we had just stayed home.

Oh I am so shocked and so sorry for you!  How terrible.  But you know, there are soooo many stories of pregnant females going through the most horrendous of experiences and hanging onto those babies all the way through like you wouldn't believe.  It doesn't have to be the end for the litter you are expecting.

I'm sure I am not going to be the only one thinking of you and hoping for the best.

How awful for you:( however I would from now on try the 'jolly hockey sticks' approach with her. You can't undo what has happened but if you are still stressed about it and fuss her too much she may pick up on that and make her more upset. Very hard I know as you must still be so angry and shaken but she needs normality now not anxiety.

I do feel it's a bit harsh of the vet to suggest aborting . Even though possible I think unlikely. One of my girls was attacked when pregnant and was fine......think positive, move on and try to act normally around her..... That would be the quickest way to settle her.

Oh that is awful, hope your girl and her babies are OK X

I hope the drunk idiot is caught..... I am sending positive vibes for your girl.

I agree with Bucksmum, she will be worrying because she feels you are so shaken - for her sake you have to keep things normal and cheerful. xx

Agree 100%. She won't understand why you are anxious. Just that something is wrong with her 'mum' and that will upset her. Jolly Hockey sticks it is

Oh gosh, this is awful.  I think your vet is not very nice to terrify you like this though.

I'd sit with her but not fuss over her, just be present. And avoid that club/place until well after puppies arrive!

I'm so angry there are idiots around in the world like this. I half hoped you were going to say you let go of your boy and he pursued him down the road...

Keeping fingers crossed x

So sorry to hear this, hoping your girl and pups are ok. Fingers crossed for you. Unfortunately there are idiots everywhere and you just can't tell where they'll be.

I am so sorry for your awful experience.  But, although not the same as what you endured, I want to tell you of one of my LH Chihuahua's.  I have always taken pregnant bitches and litters down to the static.  I had taken Polly fat belly and she had run out of the caravan before I got a line on her.  She ran to the fence at the back of my van (front faces the sea) she got through the fence and jumped.  9ft down to the road - I felt sick as I raced to the car park and round to the road.

To see her jauntily trotting back to the caravan with her tail wagging like hell.  Little sod.  I had kittens and she had 3 lovely pups 10 days later.  This is meant to cheer you up and feel more positive.  I feel for you.

Update:

Since our ordeal the other night, my girl seems to be none the worse. Thankfully, pops had the day off and he came round earlier than expected. She was following him around as he pottered about the garden. She kept pestering him for a fuss and then happily ate the breakfast she'd refused when he offered it to her. I'm so glad he came over as it took my mind off things too and we spent most of the day filling planters and making hanging baskets.

I just wanted to thank you all for your kind words of support and encouragement.  It's hard when the people around you aren't 'dog people', they simply don't understand why we worry and stress so much. The secretary called yesterday to confirm that the member has been barred until he can show he is of the respecatle calibre the social club requires.

I can't blame the vet for being so doom and gloom as I've never met them. Hopefully she will hang on now for the last 15 days or so and there'll be a happy outcome.

Jean, lovely story...well not what happened to your girl but you know what I mean!
