what is a working dog?
- By LynnT [de] Date 18.02.03 12:24 UTC
It's a dog who works. Could be a sheepdog, a guard dog, etc.

There is a list of the Working breeds recognised by the KC listed here : Working Breeds

aha...but a working BREED is different to a working DOG......Working breeds belong to the working group....but there are plenty of dogs that work from other groups...ie a working spaniel or a working border terrier!

but would a family household be better of with a working dog or not?

claire, do you mean a dog from a working breed? If so, there is no reason why they can't make a household pet, although most of them benefit from that extra bit of activity & stimulation.

On the other hand if you mean a dog thats been bred for work for example a farm bred collie ,they can be harder work since the instinct to work is very strong in them.I would not suggest that a dog bred to work would be suitable for an inexperienced owner with a family
Why don't you register(its free) and explain what you mean and then we can be more specific in our answers?
