Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Day 64 after advice?
- By Shera [gb] Date 19.05.16 10:22 UTC
Hi there just after some extra advice.  I have a  kc toy dog who is expecting her first litter today is day 64.  She only tied once with stud and I have had a scan done by vet to confirm pregnancy and know there is more than one puppy.  I have phoned the vet and they have said wait til Friday which will be day 65.  She has not started nesting she is just sleeping and when she pees there is clear mucus hanging from her.(she doesn't want to leave my side)  I can feel puppies moving and have checked her temp it's 36.9 has been 37.9-38.2 (it did from that low Monday but soon came back up again).  The stud I used is a breeder and she has been mentoring me and is saying not to panic that one of hers has gone at day 66. Just after some extra advice.  She does seem to be uncomfortable and growns when she moves. Thank you in advance

It's difficult to know as unless you had progesterone testing, your one mating may have been early (though bitches rarely stand before the LH surge) so allowing up to day 65 or absolute maximum 66 may be appropriate but for most bitches who stand at ovulation or alter day 64 would be as long as I'd wait with a maiden bitch.

As she is a toy, I'd want the vet to see her this afternoon and see what the pups are doing (scan, monitor heartbeats) and if needed get them out today.

Some of mine went 4 days over first mating, but in both cases were mated for a full week so obviously were proven floozies, happy to stand earlier than they did as maidens.

She was happy to stand at mating and I witnessed the tie but no progesterone test was done vet said as long as she is not distressed to take her in tomorrow I can feel puppies moving around I don't want to leave it to weekend. Thanks for your advice

I'd want her seen today, and if they feel it's OK then a section can be scheduled for tomorrow if she hasn't; whelped by then.

Thank you, I will ring the vet again as still nothing just hoping all is OK and maybe she was standing a few days before ovulation?  she is not bothered in the slightest and now running around playing?  Fingers crossed she whelps tonight.

Strings of mucus usually mean that puppies are on their way so if she is not progressing in labour then a vet visit is in order

I have many years experience whelping toy breeds.  The usual whelping day for mine is day 56 (fully viable pups) and I would be having a melt down if she was my girl.  For me, knowing that toy breeds are so prone to uterine inertia I would be at the vets NOW.  I could cope with dead pups, but if I  lost one of my girls I would be devastated.  What sort of "look" does your bitch have if you look into her eyes?  Because if it is inertia tomorrow is too late.

Shera please update, quite concerned, hope lack of reply is because all has gone well and your tired but happy (bitch and you both), with contented pups.
