Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Bleeding after mating

I wonder if anyone can advise me please?  I had my girl mated on 2nd and 4th May after her loss had lost most of its colour - it was her 13th and 15th day .

I have just noticed a spot of bright red blood on the floor and when I checked, my girl now has a bright red loss.  Is this indicative of anything do you think or am I panicking?

Thanks in advance

Your panicking - a few spots of blood can be normal, my last bitch had it after her mating. My vet advised me at the time that it could either be some blood left over from the season or perhaps she is sore from the mating. If it goes on for more than a couple of days id pop her to vets and get some antibiotics just to be sure it's not an infection. Chances are it's nothing.

Thanks for that.  I just panicked when I saw bright red blood but it's stopped again now and she has about 4 days left of her season so you're probably right about it being the last bits.  Will see how she is tomorrow and follow your advice is she is still bleeding
Thanks again xx

In my experience (43 litters), the season goes right on after mating pretty normally.  So if you see some blood still, no need to get upset unless she is just plain BLEEDING.  I very much doubt that, however.

What I would NOT do, unless absolutely necessary for the health of the bitch, is to give antibiotics "just in case".  I suppose one might say that antibiotics can have no effect on the fertilised cells floating around at the moment on their way to the uterus, where they will implant somewhere around day 18 after the first mating.  I can't say for sure.  But all the same, I would stay as far away from antibiotics as I possibly could.

> after her loss had lost most of its colour

Which is totally irrelevant.  Wherever the myth began I don't know, but I've never had a bitch who didn't bleed throughout mating, and continue to the end of her normal season.  Unless any loss smelled awful I don't think you are experiencing anything out of the ordinary.  And there are plenty of safe antibiotics that can be used for a pregnant bitch.

FWIW and we didn't breed often, only for our next generation in fact, with all our bitches except one, although obviously still in seasons to the end, only produced a light slightly coloured discharge into the third week, before around day 21 when it was all over, mated or not.   With the one exception, she was mated on days 12 and 14 as I recall, and then proceeded to produce a more blood-coloured discharge throughout the final week.   I was quite concerned although she was otherwise fit and well, but did start to think she'd never taken.   As it happened after an uneventful pregnancy, she produced one of our bigger litters, 9 puppies, which turned out to be one of our best litters - so good that we kept 3, 2 bitches and a male - who were among 7 we returned to the UK with, one becoming a UK Champ. and the other (always over-shadowed by her sister) took her Stud Book quali.  Sadly the male, whose bite was always rather tight, had gone by the time they came out of quarantine (this was before Pet Passport) so although edge to edge is okay in Canada, I couldn't show him here.  I did let him be used, twice by the same breeder who was aware of the bite situation (which he didn't pass on - I checked) and he is back of a number here in the UK now, including the one I have now, bought in.

Provided your bitch seems healthy (I had in mind pyometra with mine), I'd not worry unduly.    I'd avoid any antibiotics too.

Hmmm....Here in Switzerland there seems to be only one:  Clavaseptin/Clavubactin.

Our girl bled right through as per her normal season, through both matings and probably stopped about 4 days after her 2nd mating.  That was the end of the blood, it didn't start up again, and vulva swelling went down around the same time.  That was Day 19/20.

Thanks everyone for your answers.  Flossie is her usual self today, eating and drinking as normal and as lively as ever.  The bleeding is still apparent on wiping but it's not dropping to the floor....she's had 2 other litters and this hadn't happened before which is why it was such a shock
I guess all dogs and all pregnancies are different so we will just wait and see.

Thanks again everyone xxxx
