Halfway through and no one has mentioned responsible breeding, health tests and none of the pups appears to have poo'd or wee'd.
- By gsdowner Date 28.04.16 20:38 UTC

- By RozzieRetriever Date 28.04.16 20:44 UTC

Really seems like a kids programme, especially the voice over! Boring.
- By groveclydpoint [gb] Date 28.04.16 20:48 UTC

O god cbeebies channel only thing worth watchin on thats is mr bloom postman thomas tank

it was slighlty boring but pupies were cute
- By Goldmali Date 28.04.16 21:25 UTC
Well I Googled the breeders involved. Some of them give no results. Two seem to own one bitch that has a litter a year. One also only owns one bitch but proudly states that they only use one breeder's stud dogs. And one has a website that screams that they are not puppy farmers, but they have 6 different breeds and 2 crossbreeds. Say no more.
- By groveclydpoint [gb] Date 28.04.16 21:37 UTC

Watched 20mins and fell asleep...really, really dumbed down. Is it me or has tv become a portal for stupid programming?
- By Jodi Date 29.04.16 07:58 UTC Upvotes 2
I'm on another forum and I seem to remember a TV company posted that they were planning a program about puppies from birth to adult and were looking for people planning to breed their dogs in order to follow the progress of the pups. They were asked various questions about what exactly they were going to say in the program, were they going to emphasise why the parents should be health tested and so on. None of the questions were answered, ignored would be a better word, just glib marketing talk about how wonderful it all would be and wouldn't you love to see yourself on TV. I suspect nobody decent would want to appear on a program such as this as you have no control how you will be shown.
- By groveclydpoint [gb] Date 29.04.16 08:15 UTC
It was bit boring i think it was for people that want pets not for breeders and exibitors
One thing i picked up on was couple of pups went to homes at 8weeks breeders i now do not let puppies go until 12weeks
missed last 5min as hector was jumping around like tigger wanting out
i only watched it to see who it was with pointer
- By MamaBas [gb] Date 30.04.16 09:38 UTC Edited 30.04.16 09:41 UTC
I recorded it and watched last night.   As suggested - not for experienced breeders!    Some of it had me laughing while other bits, cringing, to be honest.

Loved the gang of Basset puppies of course.   I'll probably not bother to watch more.   My two were very interested however.

ps   I agree about 'wanting to be on TV' and how some pretty basic points that novice buyers should be made aware of went missing.   After THAT documentary, anybody should be a bit cautious about being involved with this kind of programme-making.  I know I would.

"One thing i picked up on was couple of pups went to homes at 8weeks breeders i now do not let puppies go until 12weeks"

Might be a bit breed dependent but 8 weeks is generally better for pups to go to their new homes
- By CaroleC [gb] Date 01.05.16 22:46 UTC
Yes, my toy breed puppies used to go at 9 weeks. I believed that this allowed their new owners to make maximum use of the socialisation window.
- By MamaBas [gb] Date 02.05.16 06:26 UTC
I think a lot of this depends on the breed.   We usually kept our puppies back until 10 weeks and had no so-called socialisation window problems.  Occasionally if we knew the people and they were experienced, we'd let them go from 8 weeks, but rarely.   Mine is a sensitive breed and do better staying together for what some might see as extra weeks.

Definitely breed related. My large breed go at 7 ½ weeks and they are more than ready then -any longer and the breeder must start taking them out and about to socialise. My toy breed won't go before 12 weeks.  They are as different as being different species in how they develop. The toys I find are far more like kittens, which should never go to new homes before 13 weeks.

My breed club states 12 weeks, so important to remember that not all breeds have the same requirements.

Glad to see this Jean on another forum Yorkie pup has been rehomed at 9 weeks. I queried it and have had more people disagree than agree. Began to think I was wrong or mixed up with cats:red:

I am a little confused as to why toy breeds should be older when they go to their new homes and yet they mature more quickly and can have puppies earlier? Can anyone shed any light? Or am I being dim?
- By CaroleC [gb] Date 03.05.16 10:01 UTC
My last litter was in 1989, and they were Lowchens. I know that sizes have come down since then, but these were certainly tough little characters and well ready to go by 9 weeks - I did run a couple of them on, but that was for my benefit not theirs. So, what has changed?
- By groveclydpoint [gb] Date 03.05.16 10:18 UTC

Apart from the fact that the breed club would come down on you like a ton of bricks?

Have you ever seen a 2oz newborn puppy?  There is no comparison, and they are very delicate.  Wouldn't take much to step backwards and crunch one underfoot.  You really need to be extra careful, and no way can people comprehend when they want a Chihuahua or Papillon when they've always had a goldie/lab/shepherd etc.

I had one lady desperate for a Chi pup, and, insisting that all the family come as is normal, I had to refuse.  Husband sneeringly said "Well I can't mess about watching where I step." You have to lift them up if you want them on the sofa.  But letting them jump off can be disaster.  It is normal for my bitches to give pups a comfort suckle at 12 weeks when pups leave home.  They do nurse for a lot longer than large breeds. It isn't unusual for Chi pups to weigh 500gm at 10 weeks of age.

I could go on and on.  But it's so difficult to explain when you've never seen how little these tiny guys are.  They are not for everyone that's for sure.
- By RozzieRetriever Date 03.05.16 21:32 UTC
Ah that makes sense, I hadn't quite thought of it like that and you are right I've never seen a puppy that size. Newborn GRs are small enough as it is!! Thank you for explaining, I'd assumed it was to do with developmental stages. Cheers Jean.
- By JeanSW Date 03.05.16 21:38 UTC
You're welcome.  And I would love to see a baby GR.
