One of my pups has tested as Carrier of the above! When Mum had her, this test was not available in my breed as its a fairly new DNA test!!! Her owners are wanting to breed from her, hence having tests and all but this are fine!!! I have tried to research the problem and it would appear that she can still be bred from providing the stud is clear? I want to get this right, obviously, and wondered if any of you have been able to interpret the information about this problem and come to a different conclusion?

If it is a simple autosomal recessive then yes that is correct a DNA tested clear mate will ensure no affected puppies are produced, and statistical likelihood is that half pups would be carriers and half clears, though obviously like with sex ratio that only works out over large numbers.

All the litter should be endorsed progeny not eligible for registration, and only lifted if appropriate after the pups are themselves DNA tested.

Thank you Brainless!! That is very helpful!! I always use the endorsements and  this is why its been picked up!! I insisted on all health testd before I would lift the progeny one!!will advise my puppy owners to do the same!!!

PRA rcd4 affects my breed (Irish Setter) too. We have a recently developed DNA test and the breed clubs have got together and issued the advice they deem accetable practice. "All breeding animals must be DNA tested. Affected individuals may be used, but only on clear individuals, the litter will all be carriers. Carriers must only be mated to clears and obviously clear to clear is good too. There is no problem with carriers of this disease, they will never suffer from it.

Encouraging DNA testing in breeders is commendable
I don't have a breed affected with rcd4, there are other probles in my breed but a friend in Croatia breeds Irish Setters and her breed club has an agreement with a testing laboratory there. They get their dogs tested at a cheaper price and a lot bigger number of dogs is tested than it would probably be if the prices were high. It's a win-win.
I think she tests also for rcd1 and some other diseases.

I will ask here the name of the laboratory so you can see with your club if they would offer an acceptable price for the club

Genescoper MyDogDNA panel if it does the relevant tests is good value as they test all breed specific and all other tests for every dog for one price.

the point of testing for non breed specific issues as it turns out that what was thought to be a problem in one breed occurs more widely in other breeds and emerging issues can be addressed before becoming common.

If they do tests relevant for the breed than it should be ok.

I asked the friend, and the laboratory name is "AnimaLabs", you can easily google it. They have a contact form for clubs and based on that they suggest a discount.

Maybe the best is to check the options on few sides and then decide.
