Why do Besenji'sonly have one season?

All I can find out is that they do have one, just no info on why they do.

I need the answer for my course si if anyone knows why or can point me to some links I would appreciate it, thanks.

wild dogs did or do tend to have one season and the more primitive breeds like the basenji  are more likely to continue that way. The season is usually at the optimum time of the year to raise pups and have food available.

We are so used to our dogs having more than one people are often concerned if it a bitch doesn't have two seasons a year. No idea why a more developed, for want of a better word breed changed to ttwice though,. I guess its evolution , safety , better nutrtion etc , just educated guess.   My flat coat was a one season girl too nothing to do with breed just her body but actually its more natural to their origins

Ive read that some besenjis which live with other dogs also have twice yearly cycles. Its probably down to better nutritional food source. Im sure we will see them have twice yearly cycles in years to come as they do become more domesticated.

Ive never had a bitch, only neutered males so im pretty uneducated when it comes down to thier reproduction. Hopefully one day though....

just another thought human females often are in sync with each others cycles when living together I wonder if that could also be the reason it can change with basenjis or other  more primitive breeds. I have never had more than one entire bitch so haven't had the experience

Tibetan Mastiffs also generally have one season too, it is down to being a primitive breed as FF has said. There are probably other breed who are just the same.

Swedish Vallhunds only have one season a year, they often don't have their first season until at least 10 months old. I had a bitch who didn't have her first season until she was 2 years old. I put this down to them being a primitive spitz breed. Although we also have an elkhound bitch who came into season every 4 months...

Some Whippets have a long interval between seasons - I can't testify to that with mine but I do know she showed no sign of coming in for the first time by 11 months, at which point I asked my vet to go ahead and spay her (he wanted me to let her have one season first).    Her mother cycled with large gaps between her seasons and her half-sisters didn't have their first seasons until 15 and 18 months of age and a big gap between them.   My main breed didn't normally start until around 8 months, and cycled at that interval, apart from one exception.    And it was quite often that they'd bring each other in.
