Topic Dog Boards / Health / BLEEDING CAN ANY ONE HELP

Hi Everyone, I'm hoping someone can help.  My 14yr old Golden Retriever Pele is at the stage in his life where we are trying to make him as comfortable as possible before his quality of life reaches the stage when we have to make that horrid decision.  He has bad arthritis and the vet informs us he is suffering from dementia and so does get spells of anxiety.  He is currently on Tramadol, Previcox & Diazepan.  My issuse at this time is that at some time 2 days ago, Pele must have had a fall of some sort that we did not witness, and he has managed to put his lower canine tooth through his upper gum leaving a hole that is constantly bleeding.  Yesterday our vet cauterized the wound to stop the bleeding, but Pele has managed to break that and we are bleeding ever where again.  Does anyone have any ideas about stopping bleeding in the mouth.  I have been making up little roll plugs like a dentist would use from paper towel & gause but it is not proving very successful as once it becomes very sodden he just spits it out.

This may sound a bit ' out there' but are you open to Homeopathy? Phosphorus is the bleeding remedy... You could give Ainsworths homeopathic pharmacy a ring and they do next day deliver for extra charge.... They will also advise you on frequency of dosage.

One of my terriers was put on Tramadol when he was 19 and this gave him bad anxiety and restlessness.

Enjoy your precious days with him x

Back to the vet I'm afraid - at least that's what I'd be doing.   I do think, hard as it is always when a dog reaches a good old age, you have to consider whether continuing to keep him going, given all the medication he's currently on , is fair on any of you.    Quality of life is paramount for me, and once there is little, the down days outnumber the up days, I believe it's usually time to call it.   Unless the vet has alternatives to offer - they had to have no further options as much as we do so if there is anything more he can do he will.   If not, then it's time.   Sadly.   I hope you have a little more time with him of course.

ps    I had one on Tramadol when she was end game with terminal cancer.   It totally spaced her out so she was taken off it.   Never again.

People can feel "odd" on Tramadol and for my dogs, it has never helped relieve pain. Don't give up on him yet. Bleeding in the mouth should stop fairly quickly through the healing properties of the saliva.  I hope it is lessening now.

Tramadol is absolutely necessary for one of my dogs, and she's never for a second been spaced or odd on it.  She's on a high dose too.  Horses for courses.

Totally agree.  Like people dogs will vary on what medication suits.  Tramadol doesn't help my pain, but codeine phosphate is a life saver.  Yet I know people who won't touch it.

I did have a dog on Tramadol after major surgery and it helped him after he had been through a lot of surgery after an accident.  So maybe it wouldn't suit any of my other dogs.  We are all different, and so are our dogs.

Indeedy.  I know people who tolerate it totally - I detest the stuff as it sends me whacko and itchy all over after one dose!

I agree with bucksmum - homeopathic phosphorous is excellent for stopping bleeding. I always have it in my first aid kit.
