Why oh why does our male little Patt insist on catching frogs. We have a very large pond in the field with a duck island in the middle, but of course at this time of year there are frogs everywhere doing what frogs do at this time of year !
The spawn is starting to appear in clumps and will soon be bucket loads. But our Patt is the only dog of the gang interested enough and silly enough to catch and kill frogs. There are disgusting dismembered bodies all around the paths leading to the pond area. He comes in foaming at the mouth but very happy and pleased with himself.
Apart from keeping him in and not allowing him a good run he is sure to find then every day. I know there are health risks but we keep an eye on the possible problems there, but why are dogs so disgusting sometimes. If it isn't catching frogs it is rolling in fox poo or even dead fish if the heron has been around - why do we love them so....

This too shall (probably) pass (with maturity?).   But do be careful.   If they are frogs, probably okay.   Toads?   Not so much!

The only things I can suggest are to work, work, work on his recall (and then work some more, and then some more...), and muzzle him so he can't actually get hold of them.  I don't think for a second this will spare the frogs - a dog so determine would most likely figure out that he could mush them to death but, he may not find that as satisfying so might give up in the end.  But they are just such a fun thing to catch and kill for a high prey drive dog, it's a very hard thing to stop!

An alternative outlet for his drive might help - perhaps a flirt pole (in essence, a horse lunge whip with a toy on the end - have a look on youtube) would expend some of it but as there isn't really an outlet there for catching and dismembering, perhaps not.  Knotted rags with treats tied into them might help with that.

Stood in the middle of the room, opened her mouth, and out jumped a baby frog.  Bless!

The cats bring in the frog. The dog copies the cats taps the frogs back to make it hop across the garden! It keeps them busy...
