Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / C-section then delivered a missed pup
- By Warrington [gb] Date 02.04.16 00:36 UTC
My first post....
My bitch was in for a ceaserian section and 5pups was delivered and we brought our bitch home and she was eating and drinking fine, the 2nd night i noticed a blood clot and pulled it out her back end, it came with a cord and i seen a placenta, i then took her to the vets the following morning and explained this, to be told she can have a weeks course of anti biotics and she will be fine the reason it wouldnt come out is due to the cervix closing so it will be reabsorbed. Then tonight she delivers a pup dead.... 2 days after her section. I dont understand how a big pup was missed? Shes been to out of hours vet and had a scan nothing further in there, but how was it missed?

It was most probably right down the birth cancel, across the pelvis.   Bit careless of the vets though!!    We had a situation where having spent the night in the vet's office, we came home with a supposedly empty bitch - I went to the loo leaving my husband to watch the new family and he yelled at me to come - another puppy was being delivered!   She was clearly out of finger reach from the back end, or palpation.   This was a situation where our vet lived a distance away, lived above the practice so he suggested I spend the night in one of the examination rooms as my bitch needed a shot for EACH delivery!!   I had to keep calling him down each time after I felt she'd gone long enough between deliveries.

I'd be asking some serious question of whoever did the C.Section, not that there's much to be done re the dead puppy really.   Hopefully your bitch and her family will be fine now.

My vet once had an imported bitch come to him very ill.  She had a section in another country.  When the English vet found a decomposing pup in the birth canal he swore that if it had been a vet in this country, he would have had him struck off.

So you know how I feel about this post.  I hope that the vet isn't being paid.

I have known this happened to a friend in my breed a pup second day after C section, but this one was alive.

If you search on the forum similar happened to another poster a year or so ago.

I too don't know how a pup gets missed in a C section.

I know of few cases too. I don't think I would go as far as sueing the practise but would expect them to not charge the section and pay for any treatment/infection that is following...

Hello! I have just had my botch scanned and the junior vet said she looked pregnant so let's see; peaches is [breed removed].. The scan was very stressful, peaches wouldn't keep still.. Anyway my daughter videoed the scan which was deemed as inconclusive and took screen shots that looked like pups - I breed [breed removed] so not a tota novice.. Would like to see what everyone thought - just asking for advice
