Hi, could someone tell me how long after the second vaccination at twelve weeks old, my puppy has to wait before going out for a walk?  I am really eager to get him socialized asap but obviously want to do the best health wise. I have read conflicting info so any advice welcome!.

Your vet is the best person to ask. I haven't had a pup for 15 years but took mine out a couple of days after last vaccination. Socialisation is important IMO

12 weeks seems a very long time to wait for second vacc. My pups are done at 8 and 10 weeks and I take them out at 9 weeks. I don't wait for second vacc, just don't let them meet other dogs or go in areas with lots of dogs. With my main breed, if I waited until 12 weeks or later, I'd end up with major behavioural problems -they have to be socialised ASAP. Other breeds are easier.

I had my pup vaccinated at 8 and 10 weeks and was told to wait a week by the vet, but took her out after about five days. I live in the countryside where there are not many dogs so decided the risk of leaving it longer and shortening the socialisation period, outweighed the risk of disease.

I've usually heard one week after.  I was told that for my first two, and I've heard numerous other people say it more recently.

That being said, Willow was out on the ground and meeting dogs before she had her second, because she needed to be socialised ASAP when I got her (she was 11.5 weeks and hadn't been socialised at all, and was a naturally nervous pup).  As she'd already had one jab, and as she'd have still had the maternal antibodies at that point, I felt the risk was minimal to walk her in a park where I know the majority of dogs are vaccinated yearly.

I had our puppies vaccinated at 10 weeks, and then at 12 weeks.   And then I still waited a week.   But then, for me, 'socialising' wasn't the be all and end all.   Mine were bred for temperament, and kept for showing and I very rarely had a problem with our regime in terms of 'lack of socialising'.   I preferred to put health risk ahead of any lack of socialising risk.   But that was me, with mine.

Mine are jabbed at 8wks and 10wks, and I take them out from 1 week after the 1st vaccination (9wks).  I do avoid places where other dogs have toileted heavily (parks, kerbs etc), until after the 2nd vaccination.

I don't start vaccinations until 12 to 16 weeks as maternal antibodies can result in the vaccine not triggering effective immunity ( WSAVA guidance )
As they have maternal immunity I take my pups out from 7 weeks but aviod high dog traffic areas

My vet will not start vaccinations until 10 weeks at this age a puppy has just the 2 initial puppy vaccinations.
He states that there is still a lot of maternal immunity before this age which can affect the vaccine taking effect properly or not.

Although I would be quiet happy to take a good healthy puppy out to unused areas where no other dogs visit I always wonder how many un vaccinated foxes and badgers use the area that may never be seen!
There is always a certain amount of risk whatever we do in the early weeks and however careful we may be.

The pup was vaccinated at 8 weeks by breeder and  I was told another vaccination 3 to 4 weeks later. However, I have left it the full 4 weeks as he had a slight heart murmur when  checked by breeders vet, and I am praying this has gone at vaccination time. He is a very healthy active pup and when I spoke to vet on the phone he said this can only be a good sign the murmur has gone, but we will see. Hopefully it won't be too long before he gets the all clear and he will be out into the world!
His socialization is very important to me but have to obviously put his health first.

Hi, took puppy to the vets to get his second vaccination and got the all clear on his heart murmur! Really pleased as I was so worried! The vet said he can go for a walk in a couple of days.

Thanks, very relieved! But can now concentrate on socializing him outdoors.
