Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Pregnancy at Day 60

Hello guys.
I have a female age 2 and we bred her mid January 2016. It was a planned breeding given that her line was excellent and I had her mated with a 5 year old retired hall-of-famer male.

It's my firsts time given that when I participate in breedings, I usually own the stud dog. So she's the first dam.

Her first weeks went by and by week 5, she was a bit swollen. Had her checked with the vet to confirm and from the looks of it, he's fairly confident with the pregnancy.
My problem now is that we're at day 60 from first day of breeding, day 56 from the last breeding, and her belly hasn't progressed beyond how she was at week 7.

Hoping for your opinions on this. Talked to the vet and either we do an X-Ray, which can of course stress her out, or simply wait it out to see if it's a phantom or not since it's a few days away.

Here are some photos I quickly snapped today. We crated her for a few minutes while we rinsed her space and took the shots:

Not my breed, and looking at pictures isn't a sufficient way of identifying pregnancy, but fwiw, if this was my bitch I would think that she wasn't pregnant. By this time my bitches have bagged up and have pronounced teats and the said has fallen out around the teats. And even with a small litter (my last litter) and a huge bitch, she was very evidently pregnant by 7 weeks.

I can't see any photos but by 7 weeks, you should be seeing puppies moving around, unless she's carrying a really big litter and they don't have much room to move, or she just has one or two, and is carrying them up under the ribcage still.   At day 60 they should be starting to move down.

I had one of mine who at around 5 weeks, looked suitable big.   But she didn't really increase much in size, and in the end, produced one puppy!   I think she may well have reabsorbed others, much as there was no sign of this (and the C.Section didn't show anything either).

I think all you can do is give her up to a couple of days beyond her due date, counting from the first mating, and unless she's in trouble before then, and get her examined by your vet.   He may give her a shot to get things moving, and/or x-ray to see what's going on.

An x-ray wouldn't tell you if there were live pups, so personally I'd go for a scan -then you will know if she's pregnant or not, if there is anything alive in there, and if there is just one single pup, you may have to be prepared for a section. Scans aren't stressful and can be done with the bitch stood up cuddled by the owner.

Anyway, headed for a scan tomorrow at the vet.
Supposedly Day 62 tomorrow.

Thanks.

Doesn't look like there's any pups to me.

When I mated my bitch year before last, she was showing all the signs until she had a tumble and then failed to progress. She was going through all the symptoms as though she had read the book of the bitch with regards to mood swings, sleeping a lot, eating us out of house and home but the nipples stopped pinking and she just didn't expand anymore. We had her scanned and she was confirmed as being empty. I wouldn't go with the vet's advice re- scanning as they have little to no experience in this field but a mobile scanner or sheep scanner will have more experience.

The vet made my girl lie on her back, they shaved her pointlessly and she hated being restrained. Since then we found a lovely mobile scanner through 'Breeder Scan'. The mobile scanner just had her standing up, hubby cuddled her head and not a clipper in sight. She let us take pictures, took her time in showing the various fetuses and the heartbeat - all in the comfort of our own home and for the same cost (or a little cheaper).

fingers crossed for you
