Has anyone had any experience of Supirilon implant for male dogs. My male dachshund had this implant to make him temporarily infertile until my girls were old enough to have puppies. He had four implants in total each six months apart. He is now 18 months past the last implant and I am concerned about his fertility returning. I am hoping to mate him this month to one of my girls and although he is showing all the expected moves his penis has not appeared and his testicles do not look as if they have returned to the original size. Have you used this implant and then gone onto breed with your dog?

He was put on this at the age of 3 years so had matured. When researching the implants I can only find mention of a return to 95% testosterone levels after 18 months and no research seems to have been done on fertility

Was he a proven stud before 3 ?
Maybe he was below average before and now he's older plus a few years of anti fertility meds won't have done much for his sperm count.
Can you get a sample analysed ? Think I've read on here on here you can diy with a cheap ebay microscope and then go from there.
For the sake of a stud fee I might be inclined to find another stud to use.
Imagine if you used him and the result was small litter or even worse.
Thank you for your help Kenny. My boy was purchased as my stud dog and as he was not ready last time I did use another stud on my other girl hoping he would be ready for this girl. Obviously wanting to use him as my stud dog I had hoped to hear from anyone who had used the Superilon and then gone onto having a litter.

I would get his semen checked for levels of fertility with a repro vet and then you know where you stand as to whether tp use him or not
Thank you Suejaw might be the next move

I've definitely heard of dogs used after suprelorin, one dog in one of my breeds and another breed too, but I would say get a semen analysis- it's the only way you'll know whether your boy is back 'up and running'. If the testes are still small it might indicate he's not quite there yet, but speculation won't help you. You can then plan matings accordingly. There's a thread on an Australian forum somewhere about someone who was trying to use her whippet (I think) at stud after suprelorin. It took some time, I want to say about 2 years, but he got there in the end. You should be able to find it on google if you search!
Thank you Tectona I do so want to use my boy as he is a splendid example of the breed and a working dog too. His testicles are still about half the original size and after watching a farming programme the other night about bulls and measuring theirs I think I may wait a bit longer. Just wondering if this implant perhaps has a longer effect on small dogs as they use the same size implant on all sizes of dog. Will try and find the whippet discussion.

The time it lasts does vary, and it is longer the smaller the dog- you're right. I'll try to find the thread I'm talking about and PM you!
Thank you so much Tectona just received your link to the thread and it seems to match my thoughts. Will use another dog this time and if his testicles increase in size over next six months will get a semen test done. Thank you very much for the information and for taking the time to help I am relatively new to breeding and learning all the time. It is so refreshing to have people like you helping. I don't think I would use this implant again if I intended to use my dog for stud. Could be helpful for people who want to check their dogs possible response to castration. A friend of mine who has a working lab used me experience to help calm his dog and help it concentrate on work. The implant stopped him marking everywhere, chasing all bitches and being mildly aggressive to other dogs so it does have its uses perhaps not in breeding dogs.

Is it an actual implant? Something under the skin? Just thinking of human contraceptive implants and although they last x amount of years, if one wants to try for a baby it is recommended the implant is removed as will still release hormones even after it has expired.

Yes I think that Suprelorin is a brilliant tool for several things, but I don't think it's recommended to be used on anything you have breeding plans with. But like I say, I've certainly known dogs go on to have litters after its use.
But alsoooooo think whether you should be breeding from a dog that's been mildly aggressive? I don't know the circumstances, you do, so not a judgement just a point I wanted to mention.
Noora it's an actual implant, but after a short time it can't be removed as it turns jelly-like. And, of course, it means surgery. So it's not removed, simply left to break down in the body.

I think the slightly aggressive comment was referring to op friends dog not her potential stud . I could of course be wrong if so a good point

Oh yes, you're probably right now that I've re-read it. Sorry for the misunderstanding.
Is it an actual implant? Something under the skin?Yes but it cannot be removed, it disintegrates over a period of time.

Sorry people been at dog show so not able to join in. I can confirm my dog has no aggressive tendencies my reference was about a working lab that prior to the same implant when around bitches would lift his hackles and stamp about in the company of in season bitches if another entire male approached. After the implant this behaviour disappeared. As to not using the implant if planning to breed I was advised by my vet that there would be no long term problems and it was safe to use on my stud dog. Hindsight is a wonderful thing but I would not have used it if I had known what I know now. I certainly think it has its uses and as a trial to check how a dog would react to being neutered it is ideal. As far as I am aware the implant dissolves over either a six month or twelve month period depending on which size implant is used (not size of dog dependent) so nothing is left which is why further implants are required to keep the same result.

I used this implant on my boy and he was used at stud then I had him implanted again twice and he was then used again after the effects had wore off. Both times the bitches had a good size litter.
Thank you for this Frenzy, hope you don't mind me asking but how long did it take for it to wear off and is your dog a small dog?

Suprelorin is fabulous if you don't want your dog to go through an operation. It does its job. However if you are doing it as a temporary measure and you eventually want to breed from your dog then it is NOT reliable. My boy was fine - very fertile -having been tested before implant. 2 years after implant still very damaged sperm and he is what they call sub fertile. So dont use this implant if you want to breed afterwards it is way to unreliable. Some are fine some are not and they can't tell you why.
