Topic Dog Boards / General / Is my yorkie really a yorkie?

Hey everyone, I was wondering if I could get some advice and wasn't sure where to ask this.

I've been looking around for a Yorkshire terrier puppy for awhile now, and decided I didn't want to show or breed so I didn't want a KC dog just one I loved.

We went to visit a breeder last week and her last unreserved puppy, and instantly fell in love!! We went back to visit her again on Monday after going home and thinking on it and brought her home.

I met both parents who looked like traditional yorkies, as did her siblings however the breeder informed me she was a silk coat and that's why she looked different to the rest of them.

However now I have her home it's playing on my mind that she really doesn't look like a yorkie.

I love her regardless and I'm keeping her regardless however I wondered what you guys thought? She's got short smooth hair that almost looks wirey however is actually very soft.

This is her and thank you in advance.

Hi Tinksmum. When you buy a puppy which is not registered with the Kennel Club, you have no way of knowing whether or not the breeding is as it should be. Admittedly that can in some cases be true of KC registered puppies too, but it's less likely. KC registration is not only for show and breeding dogs but it's to give some kind of assurance that breeding standards and ethics have been addressed. Without KC registration puppy buyers are left wondering. Looking at the photo you have linked to, you have a very cute lovable puppy but in my opinion she has a longer skull and foreface than I would expect of a young Yorkshire Terrier puppy. My guess is that she isn't a pure bred Yorkshire Terrier. No doubt you love her and that's as it should be, so no point in worrying about it now.

Best wishes.

Nursey has given a very good answer. It's a bit like this, if you wanted to buy a car, you wouldn't say that having the correct paperwork, MOT etc for it would not matter as you would not use it as part of a business. People breeding unregistered puppies only do so to make money (good breeders do not breed for money and seldom make a profit at all), and you have no way of knowing whether the puppy is purebred or has come from healthy parents.

A lot easier to stay under the radar if you don't KC register.

Most councils have a limit of 5 litters per year before needing a license. Breeding back to back seasons, parental health issues/ages.

Not a fan of the KC but I would never buy a puppy without papers.

Although KC registration is taken on trust, fact is without registration papers, you have no guarantee you have anything other than a Yorkie-type puppy I'm afraid.    I hope you didn't pay KC Reg. Yorkie prices.   The puppy is cute of course but you have to hope she lives a long and happy life with you, with minimal need of a vet!

If somebody regularly registers puppies with the KC and falsifies the information, pretty soon they will be caught out btw.   If only by fellow-breeders.   Could be that the parents weren't KC registered however, meaning although they just might be purebred, any offspring couldn't be KC registered.

For next time, even if you don't want to show or breed, buying a puppy from a reputable breeder who does register what they produce, should mean all the puppies in the litter, show or pet, should benefit from being well reared, from breeders who do their homework before putting Dog A to Bitch B.

Thank you. I have previously owned kc dogs when I intended to show however I didn't think about the paperwork being the 100% breed recognition. Makes perfect sense though.

I spoke to the breeder as I could see she didn't look like the others and she simply said she was a silk coat and that was why.

The breeder I know is a hobby breeder and this was her final litter, she's 73 and married to an ex police chief. So I would've thought what she had told us would be true.

I think I just have to see how she turns out, as I've never seen a yorkie like her.

Appreciate the advice and will certainly use it for future reference if I get another one.

Surely that should be the most important thing to you!?

I have Yorkshire Terriers myself.  Although my girls are all spayed now.  I do have to agree that my pups were not long in head and it's the reason that I have reservations on that alone.

However, I know that she will be your special girl.  And that is how it should be.

When you register with your vet and he gives her a check over, ask him to check her for patella luxation.  I wouldn't breed from my girl who had the problem, and I agree that you actually see the problem in the show ring.  It is a known toy breed problem.

Oh don't get me wrong, that is what happened and I love her more day by day.

I'm simply curious and asked in case there were any yorkie breeders/owners around who knew anything about her coat/look.

It doesn't change anything for me.

Even if she was a silk, I'd expect to see more hair on her even at that age.  What she does have looks more like border terrier or jack russell, and her head looks jack-ish to me.

Her colourings and head is very jack Russell, however she will be loved however she turns out. Enjoy her x

"she's 73 and married to an ex-police chief" by the sounds of it you haven't got a Yorkie.
