My boy had a mid-air ball catch related collision with his toller pal on the weekend and snapped an incisor and chipped one next to it. I think the snapped one is going to have to come out, we're back to the vet at the end of the week.

Those who have shown dogs with a broken/missing through injury tooth- do you tell the judge when they're checking the bite? Or say nothing and let them come to their own conclusion or not notice?

Good thing we decided against Crufts this year.

I bought an adult borzoi with a broken tooth, he'd had a great puppy career then chipped an incisor, I made him up very quickly and he also won a lot of open show Best in Shows, I never mentioned it to any judge, a couple asked and I explained. The tooth certainly never held him back, I'm sure it won't for your boy either.

I also know someone whose dog was quite overshot and naturally always penalised for it, he had a horrible accident and lost all his top front teeth and has done better in the show ring since! The owner tells the judge about the accident and produces a vet letter saying he had all his teeth beforehand...lol

I know you can show like it (I will seek permission if he does have it out), and I'm not worried about how it affects him placing, I was more wondering if you explained to the judge or just left them to wonder, ask, or not notice. But nice to know it doesn't generally affect placing.

Thanks Chaumsong, well done with your Borzoi! Funny about the friend with the overshot dog.

I guess if the judge looks like they've noticed you can just smile and say 'ball catching incident' as a quick explanation. You aren't suppose to engage in lengthy conversations though so I wouldn't say too much. :-)

Get a letter off your vet and apply to the KC for permission to show which is a letter you give to the steward when you show him,  it means the judge has to judge you as having a perfect mouth,  my boy won BIS, RBIS,  BVIS including class wins at Crufts with his

What a timely thread! I have a young dog of 16 months who's been doing very well in the ring but somehow managed to knock a front tooth 5 days ago, and this morning it has come out cleanly :-( . I was wondering whether this was the end of his show career--do I need a letter from my vet to the effect that this tooth has come out as the result of an accident, and will he be looked at in the future or should I save my money on entering him at champ shows?

You get a letter off the vet and apply to the KC I have won classes at Crufts and other champ shows with said dog

Well to complicate matters my boy's fell out too, Jay15! He was due a check up on Friday to decide what to do about it but came back to me on a walk pumping blood, with the half tooth sticking out forwards. By the time I got home it was out.

I rang the kennel club on Monday to see if I needed permission to show. No surgical procedure was carried out but surely I will need proof that the tooth was there before? The show team were all still away for Crufts anyway so I have to call back.

What have other people done when a tooth has been knocked out rather than taken out?

Just spoken to a very helpful lady at the Kennel Club who says you don't need permission to show if it's fallen out, but if I felt I wanted proof that the tooth was there in the first place then I could just get a letter from my vet. There is no requirement from the KC to gain permission to show if it's been broken and fallen out.

Many years ago, some friends had this happen to one of their Golden's. They got a letter from their vet, and took it in the bag to every show. Whenever the dog's mouth was being examined, they told the judge that they had a letter about the missing tooth, and every time the judges said it was OK, they didn't need to see it!
