Topic Dog Boards / Showing / Papillon equipment? - collar and rolling tine comb
- By debbo198 [gb] Date 13.03.16 19:29 UTC
I'm struggling to find both a collar and comb for my pap puppy -
I'm using a kitten collar to get him used to wearing it & trailing a lead but it's not suitable for outside lead walks.
I've got pin and bristle brushes but my rake with rolling tines is far too big and would like to get a decent one (with rolling tines).

If anyone has any suggestions where to look I'd be grateful.

Have look.on groomers .christies.petcetra.
Not sure where your based but their lady that makes show lead sets for toys she has stand at show at magnum

Collars, you can find 6 inch ones on Ebay and Amazon if you search, that's where I get all mine as everywhere else seems to start at 12 or even 14 inches which is too big for even an adult Pap. 6 inch is usually right for a pup and 8 and sometimes 10 inch for an adult, if not oversized.

Personally I use metal combs, not rakes, and not rolling, as well as slicker brushes.

Goldmali sorry I kept losing the rest of my post last night.

Can I ask what you use for lead walking - flat collar (iknow I'll need one anyway for a ID tag) half check , like a show lead or a harness? I'm a bit bothered about a collar as his microchip has moved to the side his neck.

I.do have phone number and email address for couple people that make collers and show lead sets if that would help

I got my small sheltie puppy a tiny harness to walk in. Fleecedogharnesses made one to size. Not cheap but excellent quality. Lasted till she was 5 months

Thanks Groveclydpoint - I've managed to get a collar off ebay that will do for now.  It's black with sparkly bits (yuck) but about the least blingy, poncey one I could find!  Why do they think small dogs have to wear sissy stuff?  Sorry if anyone's offended   - the smallest leather was 8"+ and I don't like ordinary buckles and fittings on pups anyway as they're not adjustable enough.  I don't want to get anything  made to measure yet as he's growing so fast.

Thanks to your suggestion for Christie's, I saw a small triangular slicker brush - great for their armpits and hard to get places (I hope).  I then got one off eBay, and found a rotating toothed comb - a successful shop today.
Thanks for your help.

Thanks Louise, I've got a range of different sizes of harness I used for my 1 year old as a pup - he actually wasn't much bigger at the same age.  I even got a rabbit harness as the puppy ones were too big lol.
I was wondering  about  the advisability of using a harness for walking as his breeder suggested that it''d 'throw his front out'?  I just  don't like the idea of a collar on a tiny neck.  I''ll certainly use a harness with a long line though.

Did you find it messed his coat up at all?  I've not used a harness on a dog with such a profuse coat before.

I use flat fabric collars for everyday use. I don't think the chip should cause problems but I suppose it's a case of try and see.

No probs glad you got sorted
i use to have same problem getting stuff for my clyds one was 18.2hd trying to get tack etc nightmare

My sheltie has an enormous fluffy coat but I only use the harness for walking in. The coat is a bit messy but she is not a show dog. i think the harness is safer.
The daily collar is a rolled leather Ancol one. I do walk her in it and do training with it but for longer walks I prefer the harness.

Thanks again Louise.  I'm not going to show I only put my question here as related to grooming.   I think you're doing a good mix there, though a rolled collar would be too narrow I think.   I do similar with my JRT X, but I got a whippet collar to spread the pressure.  It does mess his coat but he's a scruffy dog anyway lol.

I don't use a collar for walking  although dhe wears one with her tag on but like the puppies harness as I feel it's better in there necks .Mia is. Pomx chi around 4kg so quite small to
- By debbo198 [gb] Date 16.03.16 19:17 UTC
Thanks Furriefriends - that sounds about Robbie's expected adult size - your Pom/Chi.  Have you noticed anything re throwing front out? I don't even really know what that means lol.  I'm definitely bent to using a harness. I think they're a lot better now. I got a Mekuti for Pip but might look at something like Louise suggested - made to measure when he's almost fully grown.

I'm not disrespecting his breeder btw - she's lovely and helpful - I just like to get a wide range of opinions and advice before I make my mind up and really worry about crushing their trachea(s).

Oh how wonderful to hear that.   My Chi's are dogs not party princesses.  By the way, I love the rolling tines and Petcetara are great for coming up trumps when I'm looking for things.  I have had the combs from them as well as my favourite Japanese nail clippers.  I can get both Collie size and toy size from the same supplier.

Lol JeanSW   Party Princesses!
I strongly doubt any of yours would or could be that. I remember well you saying about your toy poodle achieving so well.
Robbie, pap pup, is definitely all dog, after only 3 weeks he's made his prescence felt - he's clever and courageous and is as much of a dog as any I've had (I've had a variety over 40+ years).

I'll have a look at Petcetera too Thanks.  I've got small nail clippers but am not sure whether they're OK and have lost confidence trimming nails (have joined a fbk group) Do you think a dremmel would be best?

LOL Ashamed to admit the only dog thing that has scared me.  Like you all those years too.  I watched videos on the use of dremmel and thought Easy Peasy!  (Nelly Bloody Know All.)

Ordered my set of equipment.  Set up in the living room and took only one dog with me so I could concentrate.  Obedient Bearded Collie lay down on the settee and I got started.  She leaped up with a start as the noise disturbed the peace.  I wet my knickers in shock and I haven't seen the dremmel in years.  I'm much better at picking up dog poo!
