Interesting because for the past week, I've been battling to get my hound back on track. His vet is now calling this colitis too. Two weeks ago he went in for his Lepto booster (he's on a 3 yearly schedule for boosters) and was booked in for a dental 8 days later. This was done, but not until late in the day - he went in at 9 am but wasn't worked on until 4 pm and discharged shortly before 7 pm. He is a sensitive boy and heaven knows how he was being kept in there for that long - I don't know at what point he received the pre-surgery sedation. He was moaning and groaning afterwards and that was treated with pain relief which was odd because his dental was a simple clean and polish. He had his anal glands checked at the same time (full but not abnormal). His area of discomfort pointed to these glands.
Then he started vomiting (half-digested food) and finally went to repeated diarrhoea with some blood. He was given Zantak and pro-kolin too and I switched him from the suggested rice and chicken (after 24 hours starving), which didn't do anything other than show undigested rice in his pooh. So I got some Hills I/D in (he's responded well to this during a previous tummy upset). He's been on the Hills for 4 days now plus the pro kolin and has finished the Zantak. On Thursday my vet recommended some bran too - and I got some natural yogurt in. All the time he's been hungry. After one evening when he was out producing rubbish roughly every hour, this morning he has FINALLY produced a normal stool and is back to only having a BM roughly 3 times a day, as before. Yeah!
Why all this happened I don't know, but this boy came to us at 4 months (he's now 6 years) with Giardia so whether this flared (stress from what happened the day of the dental?) idk. I am awaiting the result of a fecal check.
ps As he didn't much like the Pro-kolin, I squirted the required amount onto his food and that he tucked into. Is there something doing the rounds?????
