Topic Dog Boards / General / Moving home HELP!!!!
- By Lomawes [gb] Date 03.03.16 09:06 UTC
Hi. I hope someone can help. I'm a widow, moving home all on my own and the things that scare me most are:-
Will my two Dobes settle - they've never even been in anyone else's home.
Will I find places to walk them off lead?
I'm moving to Grendon/Bozeat area.

They will settle.  When my dobe and rotti X were 3yrs old, I moved them, and a 10 month old spaniel I'd had for all of two weeks, over 200 miles to where I am now.  They ran around investigating, pooped in every room, and that was that

Seriously though, you may find housetraining breaks down a little as dogs don't generalise well - housetrained in your home does not mean housetrained in every house.  But I find it's fleeting, just stick to your normal rules, maybe let them out a little more often to begin with and they'll be fine.

As for walks, ask around.  If you're on facebook, join a local pet group and ask for suggestions.  Get on Google maps, stick it on satellite view and get researching.  When I came up here I was able to ask people who I was already in contact with (I came here to be nearer college so already knew some people) for walking ideas, and I've built on that myself.

Having moved more than most I'd suspect, including both ways across the Atlantic, but not on my own (human) and certainly not without numerous hounds, I'd suggest your dogs will be absolutely fine provided you keep to their normal routine as much as possible.  The first room we set up was their room, beds, water bowls and put a baby gate across the door so there was no possibility of moving people leaving doors open.   And you do need to be aware of that.   We also took our lot out locally for a good walk asap so they started to learn the neighbourhood and where their new home was in relation to the neighbourhood.  Basically it all revolved around the hounds first.  And us second.

Dogs usually move fine, and appear to quite enjoy exploring new surroundings.   Much better than cats for sure.

Oh and do check the fencing in your new place, ahead of letting them outside.   As for local walks, this is just something you'll have to hope you find (in terms of free running).   Again we made sure suitable walking areas were available before moving - just as with vets!!

Good luck - I'm sure it will all go brilliantly.   Enjoy.

As I didn't know where you are moving to, I Googled and found this .......... http://www.northantstelegraph.co.uk/what-s-on/weekend-walk-grendon-1-761349     I don't know about 'free running' for dogs.

Thanks MamaBas I'm sure you're right.
I've googled the area and think I must go up there without the dogs and for some serious walking.

I wish you well with your move. Don't forget to put new dog discs on your dogs on the day of the move or day before so that your contact details are on the dogs on the journey and when they reach the new home and also notify the microchip company the day before you move. Dogs are much easier to move than cats and they settle really quickly. You and your furniture and the dogs' beds will be reassuringly familiar to them.
