May I ask if the vaccine should be given one week after the first or last mating please (assuming there are multiple matings)?
I know there are also mixed feelings on the subject of worming a pregnant bitch which seems to fall mainly into two camps -
1. Worm once with Drontal around the time of mating and then worm mum with pups, at 2 weeks old (accepting that pups may be born with worms?) 2. Worm from day 40 onwards with Panacur. I'm reluctant to do this as don't like giving chemicals to pregnant bitches and when my last litter (4.5 years ago) were given the puppy dose of Panacur they hated taking it and it really knocked their tummies for six - I had black sludgy poos for several days after and one or two pups went off their food.
Sorry if I have got the above wrong, advice is very welcome please.
I can only help re worming. My bitches were always wormed, and if needed, boosters brought up to date, before the mating. They were then wormed again when the puppies were first wormed, at 2 weeks. I don't like putting chemicals into my hounds, period, but obviously there are occasions when this needs to be done. I used Shirleys Syrup for my puppies, from 2 weeks of age and every 2 weeks until they went home, their new owners armed with the information to show their vet. I never had any reaction to worming them with this.
I give vaccine 7 days after first mating then again about day 53 (from first mating). I worm from day 43 - 3 days post whelp with panacur 10%. I give 0.25mls per kilo going by pre pregnancy weight and have never had a problem. I'm not saying this suits all but Ive done this with my large breed litters and currently have a toy breed (first time breeding a toy!) on day 56 and after much deliberation decided to do what Ive always done and shes been fine so far with no upset at all.
I think a common mistake when worming an in whelp bitch is to go by her current weight but I was advised by a vet to go by pre-pregnancy weight
