My bitch was mated 13 days ago after idexx blood test. The reading was 32.5 and she was mated, with a good tie to a proven stud dog the next day. Now I have noticed a red/brown discharge but have to admit I haven't checked her every day since mating as I like to leave them alone they have had enough 'action' around the back end! I have just come back from the vets who promptly announced she was aborting her puppies hence the discharge, I managed to get some Synulox from her just in case she has picked up an infection. The vet wants us to scan her at just over 3 weeks which seems a waste of time to me and I will wait until later to do that as it seems a waste and unlikely to show anything pregnant or not! My query is as the developing embryos will still be 'floating' loose in the uterus and have not yet attached to the uterine horns would there be such a blood loss to indicate abortion so early on? To me the discharge looks like she is still in season, would be 27 days? Just wondering if it seems all is doom and gloom as the vet suggested? By the way this bitch has had a litter previously with no problems at all.

I'm sure others will be along to comment who are more experienced, but my understanding is that a bitch's season continues pretty much the same after mating for however long it would usually have gone on for... if she is Day 27, not impossible she is still bleeding from that...?
Maybe you need a vet more experienced in reproduction???
Well I don't know but there seem to be a lot of breeders with this exact problem, including me.
Mine was last mated just over a week ago, ( I admit I did not blood test) and everytime I think she has stopped I see a blood discharge. It is now day 28-30.

Well mien was palpated day 26 after mating and appears to be pregnant but bled for a solid month, so time will tell.
As I understand it the fertilised blastocysts don't implant until around 18 days after fertilization anyway.

Mine have always continued to bleed after mating. Just as in a normal season.
And gone on to whelp normal litters. I doubt very much that my bitches are in the minority.

My bitches of 3 different breeds (over 30 years) have mostly gone on bleeding on and off longer than the "norm", as long as your bitch seems bright and has no smelly discharge then wait and see, vets do tend to only have problems walk through their doors and act accordingly!
Hi Zeeva, I have had exactly the same thing happening to my girl today. Can i ask what was the out come? Did your girl go on the have pups?

My girl bled quite heavily two weeks after mating, I took her to the vet who said that she was miscarrying. Had her scanned at four weeks to show she was pregnant, she went on to have six healthy pups. So don't worry too much it does happen a lot.
