they are assuming, or their vet is, that the bitch has an infection.
My vet pronounced the flow was of normal appearance and no unusual smell, and considers the use of antibiotics for just in case poor practise, and the reason for so much drug resistant bacteria.
Both doctors and vets are being advised to reduce the prescribing of AB's unless actually needed.
My bitch stopped bleeding after day 33 and hopefully we shall know if she is obviously in whelp in another week or two, but palpation on day 28 after first mating, suggested she is.
Fingers crossed she stays that way.
