I would contact your breeder for advice if they show and also find a local ringcraft club to show you the ropes as well

Hi Kaila, there is a show tomorrow at Temple Park leisure centre in South Shields, you would find it very interesting and informative if you could make it. You'll be able to chat to some locals and probably find someone in your breed to ask advice. I'll  be there with an Irish Setter if you want to seek me out.

No never too old, I didn't start with my current breed until the bitch was two years old, as I needed to wait for my youngest to be old enough to leave with grandparents for the day.

You will be at a slight disadvantage in classes against more experienced dogs of the same age, it pays to let the stew5rd and judge know your newbies so they can be clearer on what is expected.

You definitely need to teach her to happily have her teeth looked at and to stand quietly while her body is felt over, while on lead.

Look on Youtube for show footage UK, here is some of our breed being judged to give you an idea. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=UU79LtVEE4rZnDVCM2g3fggg  A ringcraft class is vital if your totally new to the whole thing.  You can find a list of classes on the Kennel club site.

If you say what breed we can find you some footage how how your breed is presented in the UK.  I'd really try to get in touch with her breeder or owner of her sire.  they will be able to give you an idea of her quality from show perspective (assuming they show).

Hi thanks for the reply I wasn't sure if I was able to say her breed on here she is a beagle of the dufosee line both her parents are dufosee! She is fine with people looking at her teeth soft as muck she would let anyone turn her inside she is pretty good at standing too as long as she doesn't get excited ha xx

Well that's a well known kennel so I would contact her breeder who can guide you
- By Kaila [gb] Date 28.02.16 00:26 UTC
I did not buy her from a kennel I bought her from a family in Lincolnshire they said they had showen her dad as a pup and he had done well but didn't have the time to carry it on xx

If she was bred by Dufossee or from two Dufosee parents that would  e the person I'd contact for advice, if it was a pup from my breeding I'd be interested to hear from you, and help if I could.

It's a pity you are not in touch with whoever bred your hound (? - same breed as your avatar) because before bothering with the show scene, it would really help to have an honest evaluation of your hound.  Showing these days is expensive and add to that, muh as some may find show people friendly, that's not always the case, especially with a newcomer (and even more if they have a decent dog!!).  You have to develop a thick skin, remembering always that the best dog is the one you go home with!

I recommend joining the Breed Club where you should be able to mix with like-minded people and perhaps get an honest assessment of your hound from them.     Crufts is coming up - go, Hound Day and sit ringside, soaking it all up.   Take some photos of your dog with you and see what their reaction is - AFTER they've been in the ring!! Things can get tense, especially at Crufts.

She does come from a well known kennel and even if you haven't been in touch with them recently, or didn't buy her directly from them, if you are planning to go into the ring with your hound, I'm sure they will want to know, help and advise.  They probably love to know where she is now too.

Even if she's registered in your partner's name although I think he should probably sign the entry form, even if you should be able to do that as his agent there should be no probably entering her and showing her yourself.   Just make sure the information is correct.

You do need to find a good Ringcraft Class - at the least it will put her in a 'show environment' although if she's been shown before, as a puppy, that should help.

ps   Re stacking, use a full length mirror to stack your hound in front of so you can see what the judge sees.

Dog shows are child friendly too so you can take your child/children
my little boy loved it only thing was my ex had to take him away when i was in ring as he cried his heaart out as he wanted to be with me and hector my pointer in ring
theirs also border union champ show at kelso in june only thing is if it really wet the show outside so not very child friendly if it wet and muddy
best of luck its really god fun showing

- By gaby [gb] Date 28.02.16 22:43 UTC
You cannot take your dog to these shows unless you fill out the entry form and enter your dog as not for competition. This has to be done before the closing date. You will find the entry form and date on fosse data. You have to put your dogs registration number with the kennel club, on the form.

If you read the schedule where the definition of classes is listed carefully you should not go wrong.

it is very important to list the dogs ownership exactly as it is on the Kennel club registration certificate, and that the dogs name also is as on the certificate (without the letters and numbers after the name).

Dogs have had their wins taken away for such errors, as well as entering classes they are over qualified for.

When entering one of the lower ranked shows, I'd suggest you go for it in terms of experience to be gained.   However, with a Champ show, it's up to you but you have to consider how mature your dog is in terms of what his opposition might be, and also the fact that once beaten in one class, you can't compete in the Challenge as you'll have a beaten dog.   In other words chose what you think is an appropriate class for him at this stage of his growth/experience and stick to the one class.    Quite often novice exhibitors put their dogs in every class he is qualified to be in, with very little chance of winning them all!   It might help to have an experienced person, perhaps his breeder, take a look at him and advise - after all it's their kennel name who will appear against your dog's name.
