Topic Dog Boards / Health / Demodectic mange help

Hello, new to the forum and need some advice. My new puppy (who I kept from my own litter) has puppy mange. The vets have prescribed advocat to put on every 2 weeks. I was wondering how effective this is as a friend who has one of my puppies goes to pets at home And they have given her a new drug on the market for the same problem (as mum and the whole litter has it) a tablet and shampoo to bath him in twice a week. My little girl is 13 weeks old now. Is there anything else I can do to get the problem under control? She has a very pink underside, patches of hair loss on head and legs, and quite a few scabby patches.

Thanks to anyone that replies.

The information in this article may help you.   Other than being advised by your vet.   Obviously mum needs to be treated.

Please scroll down to the paragraph titled - Prognosis and impact on breeding.

You are best taking the advice of your vet and the softer option of the Advocate may well be appropriate, but if neccessary, there are stronger treatments available like Amitraz dips or Invermectin (not for Collie types). One thing is for sure, successful treatment is a long drawn out affair and shouldn't be rushed. Demodectic Mange is not contagious to either humans or other dogs. It's a failiure of the affected dogs immune system to control a natural population of demodex mites. Demodex is not hereditary, but the faulty immune system which allows the over population of mites may well have a hereditary element. Therefor it isn't wise to breed from those affected or their siblings. Best of luck with the treatment, I hope they get well soon.

Hiya, thanks for the replies, the mum wasn't bred on purpose, just one of those things! We are treating the mum along with my other dog (who is 9 years old) as I've heard it's to do with the immune system and him being old and all. Both mum and offspring will be neutered in due course as don't want this happening again!
Becky.

The Advocate treatement worked fine for my dog many years ago. I was told that a long period of anti biotics and steroids had cause the immune system to cause this. I changed her food to raw feeding to build her up and she had A1 health from then on.
