Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Herpes jab

Nimue came into heat yesterday!  What a relief (for me!).  She waited 10 months since her last season, so I guess she is one of those females with long cycles.

When exactly do you all give the herpes jab (if you give it at all, which I definitely DO)?  No one seems to be quite sure, and the internet gives conflicting or unclear information.  Before the mating?  After the mating?  If before, how many days after the first show of color?  If after the first mating (or all the matings?), when?

Thanx!

I do but usually after within about 7 days of mating and then 7-10 days before expected whelping if you have been lucky.

Yes same for me, 7-10 days after mating and 7 - 10 days before whelping.  Not all vets have it in stock and may need to order it in so call to check.

Agree withe others. Just make sure you order in plenty of time. Some problems getting the vaccine at the moment.

As others have said, make plenty of time to source the vaccine as I was unable to get it for my last litter. Seems there's a supply issue.

Good luck.x

I will do it before, when we go for our first progesterone test.  We will be at the vets anyway, so it will reduce vet visits to do it then, rather than after the mating.

It can be given any time from start of season to 7-10 days after mating.  A 2nd jab is needed 1-2 weeks from whelping.  This information is from the manufacturer...

I asked our vet about it when we last saw him and he had never heard of it, but was sure he could order it in.  So agree with the others above about ordering it early.

After having misses I took the advice of a repro vet and gave it to her as soon as she came into season. And then 7 days before she was due to give birth after third attempt she was pregnant.
