I've never actually had any of my bitches scanned, can any of you knowledgeable folk tell me if they shave off the fur.
Thankyou
Barbara

Hi Barbara
I have had bitches scanned and they do take a small amount of coat off but its under belly.I guess they could try to scan without shaving but the jelly stuff still needs to go on.
What breed is it?
Carolyn

Even my (short haired) dalmatian had her belly shaved. The gel needs to be in close contact with the skin or the result won't be accurate.

My vet shaved but the lady I took her to next time didn't she just scanned her.

Mine have never been shaved - been done very professionally by a sheep scanner, and they don't often shear the sheep beforehand!

Vets tend to prefer to shave the bitch, but I get my bitches scanned by a very good sheep scanner man and no shaving is involved, just went there tonight and I have 10 pups on the way. I was told is you can get some one who scans sheep they are more accurate than any vet. This is the 3rd time he has scanned for me and he was spot on, on the 2 previous occasions so fingers crossed
Margaret

jo and marget where do you go to have them scann,i off to mate wispa today so i would like to scann her later as i have never scan the last two litter i had,

Sheep scanner in Wales - would you believe!!! Haven't used one down here, but think there's a good one in Bedfordshire that one of Noof's wives has used!

When I asked my vet not to shave Libee he told me "it is a must" When i got home and called one of my friends who I show with what he had said she said to me "Thats a lot of sh*t, he has never shaved my dogs". Dont know what he was playing at, but i know a lot of people who have had very good scanns with out shaving.

Hi all, had 3 litters scanned, 2 Labs & 1 mongrel & niether time were they shaved & they were both by different vets.
Christine, Spain.

I do know of a brill lady who scans dogs, cats etc if anyone is interested, she is in the Tamworth (Staffordshire ) area.

Terri,
Think you're nearish me? Try phoning Runnymede Vet Hospital in Egham and ask them for Sam Wilkinson's number - she goes there regularly (when she's not up to her elbows in sheep!), but you may also be able to arrange to see her nearer you. Number is 01784 436367.

Theres a lady who advertises mobile ultrasound (kent based) in the classified section of Dog World quite often. I cant give you the number, cos Ive got pups, and every spare paper has been used, but the next issue is out tomorrow.

Hi, my vets in Snodlaand Kent have scanning equipment, it cost us £50 to have our little Yorkie scanned. However he kept telling us that scans are not reliable, and he was right, he could only see 2 puppies she did however have 5 bouncing puppies.

Terri, If you get in touch with Polly, there is a person in the Bucks area who scans, she used him some time ago.
Best wishes, John

How much is the average price at a vets for an ultrasound?
It only cost me 45 pounds for a scan of my baby at a private clinic!

I go to a woman locally and she charges me £13 for a swab and £6 for a scan or is that the other way round???? Can't remember but it certainly doesn't cost a lot with her compared to the vets and she's better at it than them.

I expect its the other way around - but both are amazingly cheap - lucky you, my vet charges nearly £30 for a scan and £11 for a smear. I dont bother scanning - just to find out if they are pregnant - but might if I had entered for shows. I only scan at 6-7 weeks if I am not sure or if she is obviously pregnant but small tummied. One or two puppies usually means BIG puppies and I want to know if there may be whelping probs. I'd rather keep them safe at home and unsressed - just my opinion.

When you say locally do u mean in Wales or just near you?

I usually ask for the scanning to be without shaving because they are show bitches and the coat would take ages to come back.

Hi,
We have just experienced our first dog scan, it was fantastic. The vet didn't shave her he said it made no difference. It cost us £38.05. All I can say is WOW!!

We always use a lady in South Wales who is also a sheep scanner, but also many breeders use her as well. She charges £25 which includes a revisit the week before the bitch is due to detect any breach pups so you can be forewarned. There is no shaving involved & she is such a nice woman to talk to. On the first scan (approx 4 weeks) she can predict numbers & due dates, and also measures to pups. Many times she has told me to expect pups five days before my planned date & she has always been spot on. Every time I visit her there is always a queu of breeders waiting as she is so popular. I would reccomend her to anyone.

I experienced my first dog scan on wednesday it cost me £27 at the vet and it was pretty rubbish. The vet said she was 80% sure she was pregnant th epicture was really poor quality couldn't make much out really. My bitch was excactly 4 weeks from mating. What vcould you see on the scan?

Hi Crazicrest,
When Noo Noo had her scan we could see the sacks, the umbilical cord the pup's legs head back etc... We even got a great photo!! I was advised not to scan until between 5 & 6 weeks. Noo Noo was 5 weeks when scanned, it was really great.

I think I might see if I can get a better scan elsewhere when she's 5 weeks. Thanks for the info I do feel a bit cheated though.

Good Luck next time!! Ask your vet if he will re-scan free of charge as the last one was inconclusive. I doubt he will but it's worth a try. :D

I think I'll pay the money and go elsewhere. There's another vets nearby that I've used in the past so I'll try there. Thanks again
