Hi,
I have a grumpy old man of 14(neutered) who really is never going to get on with pup, we accept than and deal with it,...so no probs...
But.. 1 Dec looked like she came into season, alittle swelling as usual, but as she black , and kept herself very clean, I doubt that we would of noticed it if it was nt for three weeks of heaven, wen Sam and Grace flirted with each other madly, so nice to see, but off corse all good things come to a end, and normality resumed just after Xmas, growling barking bullying etc,....
But yesterday I noticed she was really swollen around her lady parts, and one or two drips of poss blood noticed on tiles, but there has been no return of the flirting or general just getting on ,like we saw in Dec, so I am wondering now whether the cessation of hostilities was just a coincidence??
We are to spay her between 2nd and theThird , (not going to get bullied by vet who wanted it done at anything from 6 months), but just want abit of advice really, should I take to the vets to get her checked out or could this be the actual season, she hasn't been off lead to have any secret liaisons ,so no worrying bout her getting pregnant,,,,or could it be old Sam getting his wires crossed in December , his lifetime friend we lost just over the year ago, and he loved her so much, but never showed any of the affection that he was showing against his arch nemesis that is grace,
Any ideas?
Thanks

How long did the event in December last for because I'm wondering whether she's having a split heat, even if you said she was like this, in December for what would be the normal length of time. I think, as I'm only guessing, you probably need to get her checked by your vet - obviously coming back into season this soon is wrong, and will be pulling her down.
I hope this isn't a pyo!!!
ps I'm surprised at your vet because most, with a medium to large breed, prefer to allow one season before spaying to let the growth plates close. I took my Whippet in to be spayed (book it) around 6 months and my vet said he'd prefer to wait, citing bone development problems and the risk of spay incontinence. I wanted until she was 11 months without seeing any sign of a heat starting. Took her back and asked him to go ahead which he did and she's fine (now 7+ years).
Hi, thanks for info,
The flirting swelling etc lasted about three weeks, till just after Xmas day, it was such a shame that their relationship reverted to the previous ten months we had with her , Sam wouldn't have anything to do with her even wen a very submissive 8 week(-and still very submissive now to everything)' but for those three weeks he would lay next to her, and generally act like he was a youngster himself, wiggling on his back, licking her face etc,
Grace has licked his face constantly again from 8 weeks, but when he has enough we separate them up for a while,
She also has this habit of putting her front paws up on him and as he is smaller and much older and got his own problems, pushing him down we stop immediately , it just her way of playing,
Anyway I ll ring vets up first thing I hadn't herd of a split heat before, but of course pymo I have, she seems quiet well in herself, no other worries,
I myself stated the same thing about growth plates etc to the vet, all I got was " well I been doing them at 6 months for last 30years'
