My girl delivered 7 puppies on Thursday evening/ Friday morning. Textbook delivery and as a first time mum, she was brilliant, puppies were cleaned and sorted by her until the last one. She delivered a large water filled bag with afterbith attached, which initially I thought was empty, she started to beak it open and I took it away from her, thinking it would have to be thrown away. I could not see anything in the bag as it was filled with black liquid but broke it open anyway. Inside was a puppy in another bag which it I took off. The puppy was black, caused by the liquid and struggling to breathe. I aspirated and cleaned him and he is now fine. Never seen a puppy born with 2 bags, has anyone else had this experience?

Certainly had multiple bags, and also had the horrid liquid in a bag with mummified pup, (had two in a litter born like it they were half the size and one didn't even have a cord anymore).

I assume the dark liquid was the placenta disintegrated in amniotic fluids.

With your pup I wonder if he started out as a rare twin in one bag, and was absorbed along with it's placenta, hence the colour of the liquid.

Thanks Brainless, never encountered it before. So lucky he survived and is doing well.

I once had a whole litter born - all triple bagged.  I have never felt sacs this thick in my life.  I found them very, very difficult to tear open.  I honestly believed that any pup would be dead by the time I could get to it.  As I struggled to open each sac I felt that the survival chances of any remaining pups was lessened.

As it happens all pups were fine.  But I never want another litter like that!
