When exactly is Day 63? If the mating took place on a Saturday, would day 63 have been yesterday? Or is it today? They mated twice, one in the morning and once at night. The bitch is comfortable, happy and eating less today. Her owner has a copy of book of the bitch but we are all rather anxiously excited and I can't keep phoning her every five minutes for news although as the less squemish of the two will be there at the birth. She is an English Springer Spaniel. I am pacing the floor here!
I don't count the day of mating as the first day .I have ESS myself and have had several litters.I find by counting this way they almost always come on the 63rd day. However there are always exceptions to the rule

If she was due today (16th Feb), she would have been mated on 15th December.
Hope this helps. :)

She was mated on Sat 14th Dec. All is well at the moment, so vets tomorrow if nothing happens. Does anyone know if Springers appear the day they are due?

Keep a watch on her - it could be any time. Probably best to make up a bed in the room where she'll be whelping - it always seems to start in the small hours!

She is being watched closely with mum sleeping on the sofa next to her. Being an 'in-law' just waiting for the call I feel a bit helpless. I made no plans for this weekend thinking it would definitely be Friday or Sat!

Have u taken her temperature at all during the week?, this can help to let u know when she would of went into whelp. They can hold off as long as 68 days, unless she is in labour then I would keep ur vet posted just incase. Have u noticed any contractions at all? Since she was bred from first breeding Dec 14 her whelp date would be feb 15. Any time soon :)
Wishing u the best of luck :)

A call to the vet reassured us that we can wait till the morning and see what happens. Who knows what tonight brings - not much sleep that's for sure! We haven't taken her temperature as we only have those feverstrip things you use on children and I doubt you can use them!! She is calm and happy although a little uncomfortable when she lies down. Pups are moving well but certainly no sign of contractions. I will keep you posted.
Springers are extremely hardy dogs and will go righ up to the last minute without showing any signs at all.
I've had one bitch playing around like a spring lamb one minute and then delivering her first pup on the garden path with no signs of a contraction.
The last litter we had the bitch was digging a lot the day before then nothing the following day, behaved normally as if she wasn't even pregnant, then that night she had 8
They do tend to go off their food 24 hours before if that's any help

A visit to the vet this morning resulted in her being sent home to await further action! She is happy and healthy and apparently it can take up to 6 days for the sperm to travel to the egg and therefore can add a few days onto the 63 we counted from. No news yet!
Is she not showing any signs yet?Digging, restless, panting, off her food, clingy etc etc??I suppose all dogs are different and in extreme cases can go up to 72 days.Personaly I dont know many that have gone this far and if your vet says it can take up to 6 days for sperm to get to egg then I suppose it must be so.
Good luck anyway and I hope things start moving soon for you both

She is definitely more clingy and only has bursts of activity now. Slightly off her food and would rather nibble than scoff her usual large portions. Other than that she is fine. The vet said they would review on Weds but obviously keep a close eye on her and inform him of any change in her condition. All we can do is twiddle thumbs.

The waiting seems endless, doesn't it? How much weight have you worried off yet? I lost a stone with my last litter! :)

oh! if only. I am more likely to put it on. The worst thing being you can't even have a hefty G & T incase I have to drive to the vets!

Tuesday morning now - no news!
Oh Dear!! Don`t know what to suggest, except speak to vet again. But if she`s fine & not distressed or anything try not to worry!
Christine, Spain.

is their alot of puppy movement, how far gone is she now?
I do hope soon :)
ttfn :)

i would get her to a vet asap for a check up,wispa was 64 day and brie was57 day when they had their puppie 63 day is avage more recent studies have shown that a normal pregancy can last as little as 54 days or as long as 72 day this is from the book of the bitch which is my bible when the girls are pregnant
I too rely on he book ofthe bitch as my bible.Having had springers for the last 20 years,I can honestly say I have never known any of mine to go that early or late.72 days you'd be a basket cse by then wouldn't you.As far as my girls go,I have had the odd one go a couple of days early but they do usually go between 62 and 65 days,it's really unusual for them to go over that. Can you feel puppy movement???All I can say is really "If in doubt get him out"
Seriously if you are concerened take her to the vet

Saturday was 63, or 62 whichever way you count it, so today (tues) is 66 or 65. The pups are moving, she is eating little but often, running around and acting normally. The pups are moving and there is no sign of discharge or anything untoward other than a belly fit to burst! She will be at the vets in the morning, unless there is news before. Her owner has the Book of the Bitch, but really every stud owner should have one too so they can gen up - I will order one with my next Amazon order! There really is no cause for concern with her health, only our sanity!
She`s gonna have them when she`s good n ready! What a little madam eh?? :) :)

Wednesday - Day 65 or 66 - she did lots of scratching and digging last night and is much more restless this morning! Her vulva is much more swollen and her nipples are darker and larger. Could this be the start ......?
Lets hope so for your nerves sake!! :)
Christine, Spain.
Good sign.Looks like today could be the day.

Looks like she's started - don't go out, and keep the Gin and Tonic to hand! Good luck! :)

Hopefully I will have news on pups by tomorrow. She is definitely unsettled and can't understand why she doesn't fit on a lap as she wants lots of cuddles! Despite wondeful whelping bed and yards of vetbed I can see the sofa coming into play here! I will keep you posted. Thanks for all the support.

9pm Weds - no news yet. Most definitely the early stages of labour (just niggling) although happy and picking at food. Another call to the vet and reassurance that as long as bitch is well and pups are moving, no sign of anything nasty then let well alone and make nature take its course. Friday am she will be induced if no pups by then. He assures us Friday will be the last day!
Hope everything is going ok for you

The site's been down all day, and I'm dying to hear if there's any news??!! :)
Yes, me too!:)

6.30 Thursday - last night she was sick and this morning was wet around her back end. She has been "slimy" around the back end since this afternoon and is panting. The vet is going to check her out before he goes home just to ensure she is fine and doesn't need a spot of oxytocin to help things along (given the history of the past week). She is still happy if a little confused. I will post later - hopefully with numbers and sexes.
The only positive thing that keeps me going is that I haven't had endless postings or emails with regard to dogs going over dates and disasters happening. So next time you get to the 63rd day guys .... just think ... you could have another week to go!!
