Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / worming during pregnancy - a question...
- By rabid [gb] Date 20.01.16 11:57 UTC
The female I'm planning to breed on her next season (about 4mnths time), doesn't tolerate wormers very well.  I've tried her with both Panacur, Drontal + and (when she was a pup) Drontal Puppy - and the same thing happens, regardless of the wormer used.

After a few hours of taking it, she appears to get a tummy ache - she is just really whiney and unsettled and (frankly) a total PITA all evening.  The next day, she is back to normal again.  No pukes or runny poops.

I've been considering whether to worm during pregnancy, and - this aside - I think I probably would use Panacur from Day 40 or whatever it is - but I'm a bit worried as I don't want to add to the discomfort of pregnancy and all the physical changes going with that, a stomach ache - especially as it will presumably be ongoing, if she needs a daily dose of it...??

SO:  I'm thinking I either won't worm during pregnancy, and just worm when she comes into season and at week 2 with pups.  OR:  I could, now (pre-season or mating), have a trial run with some Panacur at the pregnancy dosage for a few days, just in case the lower dosage doesn't cause the same upset stomach and she can tolerate it.

Any thoughts on this situation and what I should do?  Not worm or have a trial run???  Thanks!

Funnily enough my current pup is like that, but I have continued monthly worming to 6 months and just done her again with everyone else at 8 months as bitch to be mated has come in season.

As you only giving a 1/4 dose daily you may find she may not react.

I'd worm her as normal when she comes in season.

If it's a big issue for her then I'd stop, and just worm pups ASAP, and rigorously.
