Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Could my bitch be pregnant ?
- By Laurad [gb] Date 31.12.15 11:45 UTC
Hi I took my small breed bitch to stud 7 weeks ago. They mated on day 12 and tied and then again on day 13 and tied.
She had a private scan on day 35 after mating and the scan said no puppy's. I was shocked as her nipples where larger and pink and she had been sick a few times since mating and she's never sick so I thought she was.
A few days later the skin beneath her nipples started to swell like they were  filling with milk.
We are now on day 52 and over the last couple of weeks her nipples have got a lot bigger and are filling with milk, her tummy is a lot wider at the sides. She's very restless up and down a lot where as normally she sleeps the day away.
If I hadn't of had scan I would now be 100% sure she is pregnant.
So now I don't know what to think. I have spoke to my girls breeder and she said it could be a phantom pregnancy altho she has been breeding for years and never had a phantom from a mated bitch.
I have rang the scan lady and she said she's never had a wrong scan.
I feel like I'm kidding myself and she can't be pregnant if scan said no but then I look at my girl and think she defiantly is.
I am only going from the mating days and she could of ovulated after that so if scan was actually day 29/30 would it have picked up pups still or could the scan be wrong?

By about 7 weeks, apart from the size increase (and don't 'milk' her!) you should be able to see puppies moving around.  If you can't, you'll still be watching come 62 - 63 days, count of that and this is why I don't see any point scanning which only confirms or not (if you are lucky) a pregnancy at the time of the scan.   Once she's gone full term, and a couple of days over, unless she's in trouble before that, take her in for an examination at which point your vet will probably x-ray (much more reliable than a scan) and depending on whether or not she's empty, give her a shot to get things moving.

I have had a few false pregnancies, but usually only after the bitch would have whelped.

Thank you for your reply. I just don't know what to think and last few weeks I have driven myself crazy. I wish I had never had scan now as all I keep thinking is it was wrong but then I don't know anyone who's had a negative scan then gone on to have pups, and the scan lady said she's never been wrong. So I guess it must be a phantom. She sure has me convinced she is tho.
The breeder of the stud mated one of her bitches round the same time and so they would roughly be the same and her bitch is defiantly in pup and she can feel puppies moving. My girl looks bigger but no movement.

Bitches go through the same hormonal changes whether mated or not, and the only time mine have had a obvious phantom was when they were mated and missed.

Maybe when we mate a bitch your looking for signs that you would ignore on one that wasn't???

A X-ray would tell you for sure by 8 weeks, but your best et is to simply wait and see.

If she still looks pregnant after 63 days from last mating I'd pop her into vets for a look, they would hear heartbeats with a stethoscope.

Thank you. It's confusing as I've been told so many different things, ppl saying they only have a phantom after the pups due date, others say a phantom mimics a real pregnancy at the same stages.
She has had 5 heats previous and her nipples have never swelled or turned pink b4. She is only a small dog and you would easily see the differance.
Her sides have got bigger and are harder.
When standing her belly is lower and nipples hanging down  and her back looks dipped slightly. I have been taking weekly pictures since she was mated and her shape has completely changed. But then I have been told that a phantom they can get bigger too.
If I hadn't of had scan then I would of been preparing welping box now etc but now she has had a negative scan I guess I have to accept it's a no.  I just worry there's a singleton in there and I don't want her to struggle giving birth to a singleton.

What did u do brainless with ur bitches that had a phantom? Had u had negative scan? Did u prepare in case there was pups?
- By Brainless [gb] Date 03.01.16 12:58 UTC
Yes, treat as if they are, but do not up the food unless I am certain.

Thank you. Yes thats what I thought. I've not changed her food.
I guess only time will tell now. Will just have to wait it out.

I only use ultrasonographers with a great reputation or accuracy these days.
Twice I've been told my girls are empty by 2 different operators....both went onto have good big litters.
It never happens these days and my chosen scanner will accurately measure the actual size of the puppy giving a good due date approximation....one such was 5 days later than my recorded date, the sperm waited for a later ovulation.

Hi tooolz thank you for your reply. Did u get ur girls re scanned when u got negatives?
I feel silly thinking she could still be in pup as scanners these days are so accurate. The scanner said she can see pups from day 25 after mating, but likes to do it from day 35 to get accurate numbers. If my girl didn't ovulate when she mated then the earliest she could have been was day 28 so surly she would have seen pups ether way.
My girl is acting odd today she wouldn't get out of bed this morning and when I picked her up she was dripping with urine! She must have just weed herself and stayed laying in it. I put her straight in the bath and after her bath she was sick everywhere. Shes refusing her breakfast. She's very out of sorts at the moment.

I think a visit to your vet is called for in case she has a urine infection and/or temperature.
I knew in both cases with my bitches by 4/5 weeks so never bothered going elsewhere, just struck those operatives off my go to list.

Hope your girl is ok.

My worry would also be Pyometra, it may not have been urine but leaking puss from and Open Pyometra, this is a veterinary emergency if it's pyo, though open not as bad as closed.

Either will cause septicaemia/sepsis which can lead to death quite quickly.

Hi thanks for your replies. She snapped out of it in the afternoon and ate her dinner and has eaten her breakfast today. She was dry over night so no more accidents.
It was defiantly urine yesterday u could ring her bed out it was drenched.
Your messages have concerned me tho so I'm going to ring vets today. I think I need to know ether way if she is or not and check she doesn't have anything else going on. I'm worried about a singleton and her not going in to labour. I had a scan to stop these concerns but I still have them so I assume a scan at this stage will be 100% correct.

My vets are fully booked and seemed very unconcerned so wouldn't see her as an emergency. I've booked her in with a different vets I've not been to before for a scan on Thursday.
